Grimbaud's entire being radiated humor and excitement as the prince played along with her little game. She tried her best to be a brave knight, even going so far as to give him a little salute like she'd seen some of the other guards do, but ruined the effect with a large amount of seemingly uncontrollable giggles and gap-toothed grins. Had she not been so quickly, and efficiently, distracted by Tristan's companions, I have no doubt that she would have begged him to play lookout (which would have meant a lot of tramping about the castle's gardens while fighting off invisible bad guys, something I doubted the prince would have gone along with). Of course, I'd been doubtful - and nervous - that he would refuse to play along with my girl at all or, worse, would have found a way to punish her for her seeming lack of respect towards her betters. But Grim didn't see people like that - better or worse, richer or poorer - she saw them all as lovely beings just waiting to be her newest best friend. That same philosophy applied to animals, which was why we ended up followed by Pablo, a shaggy mutt of some sort, more often than not. He'd found a suitable home with one of the nobles who'd had a soft spot for raggedy creatures (my girl included), but I think Grim would always hold a place in his canine heart.

I studied the prince as he studied my girl. He was a rather handsome young man, with an obvious intelligence. I'd often wondered about the ruling family, particularly now that Grim and I resided within the Castle when we could, and found him to be... unexpected. There weren't many young men, especially young noble men, who would stop to play along with a silly little girl in a too-big saucepan. Grim's little hands were curled into fists now as she fought the desperate urge to hug and pet and kiss the dogs without permission. For as long as I have known her, my girl has had the ability to speak with animals of all shapes and sizes with domestics like cats, dogs, and horses being among her favorites. Since our arrival at Shaman, though, this ability seems to have fled, so we've had to discuss the appropriate ways to approach an animal.

Grim squealed eagerly as Tristan smiled and nodded, summoning the dogs from their waiting stance. Grinning so wide I thought she would split herself in two, she watched with avid interest as the dogs galloped towards her. Tristan fed the most excited dog first and then, to Grim's utter excitement, offered the second piece for her to feed the dog. To my slight embarrassment, though, Grim took the offered meat and studied it curiously, even going so far as to sniff it before she gave it to Hodain.

"What is it?" she asked him, cocking her head to the side curiously. "It smells nice. Doesn't it, puppy?" This last was cooed towards Hodain, who she was now loving on with lots of pets.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before the big green elephant dog in the room drew her attention. Though she was staring at him, excitement and an almost desperate need to pet shining in her eyes, she was able to momentarily turn her attention towards Tristan. She accepted his much larger hand, beaming up into his face.

"It's nice to meet you!" she said politely, much to my relief. She giggled, her eyes crinkling at the corners, when Tristan gestured to his tunic. The fabric was a far better quality than anything Grim owned, even her borrowed dresses were often stained and muddied by her adventures. "It's very nice! Did your mama make it for you?"

Grim's attention was immediately returned to the big dog, who she was still quite desperate to befriend. She beamed at him when he peeked around Tristan's leg, offering her hand (still smelling of sausage) for him to sniff.

"Aww, don't be shy Cellydon! You're such a pretty boy, yes you are!" Grimbaud cooed at him, trying to coax him out from behind his partner.
