Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

The warm spring evening was quiet except for small animal noises in the woods. But all Greer could hear was the labored sound of her own heavy breathing. Water and saliva dripped from her jaws and she felt a slight relief. At least her thirst was quenched if nothing else. Greer focused on her breathing, mentally batting at the insults from her brothers in years past. The cruelty of their jabs squirmed in her mind and made her teeth ache. Years. It had been years since she had last seen either of them and yet their words still stung.

Weak. She was weak to still be thinking of something so foolish as sibling rivalries. She didn’t even know if Shaw and Fyfe were still alive. For that matter Aksel might as well be dead. It had only been a few months but the world was a dangerous place. That had been an early lesson for Greer. She rolled her shoulders to push the memories away and started to turn.

A mumbly male voice caught in her dark ears and Greer’s first thought was, Aksel?. But she raised her eyes and no, the wolf standing on the bank was a stranger. For a long moment Greer stared at him like a deer caught in headlights. His coat was a riot of colors, all bright and unusual. Even from a distance Greer could see he was younger than she, though to her these things were not his most defining traits. Her pale yellow eyes locked on his, which from her place in the river were dark, perhaps a shade of blue or green. It was as though the boy had an aura surrounding him, bright and enticing. Ah’m hungry. Ah’m tired. This is just a weird reackshun. Greer told herself, though it wasn’t quite convincing. She felt drawn towards it in some strange way and this scared her.

The she-wolf took a few careful steps towards the bank, but moving diagonally so as not to get too close the stranger. He was like a poisonous flower, attractive but not to be touched. Her ears flicked as he repeated his earlier query. Greer had been so distracted she had not even heard what he said. At his words some of her trance broke and Greer glared at the boy imperiously. “Ah’m no lady, pup.” She took a few more cautious paces, her long legs sloshing in the river. “And ah’m just peachy, thanks very much.” Her words were stiff and unwelcoming, yet all that tumbled through her mind was Lucero. His name is Lucero.

She wanted to get away from him as quickly as possible.
