I could tell Mallos had been busy at work on something; his pen was still in hand and the parchment still rested on the desk but my discreet peeking revealed nothing but garbled nonsense. I spoke no languages besides English and could tell the language he'd written was not that, so I was left in the dark. I wasn't normally a snoop - I usually cared very little about what others got up to - but I sensed, perhaps in part because of the timing, that his letter had to do with my girl. I didn't think Mallos had ill-intentions towards her - I sensed rather the opposite from him, honestly - but I've never been much for surprises. If he had plans for my girl, I ought to be involved. Right? I was distracted from this line of thought, and the always-present worry for my partner, when Grimbaud's not-so-subtle announcement interrupted. Mallos agreed with her grumpy proclamation and set about righting her buttons, earning himself a gap-toothed grin that was far more common on her features.
Grimbaud watched owlishly as Mallos turned back to his desk and did something with the pendant from around his neck. Neither of us caught a good glimpse of what happened, but a flash of yellow light later and the letter he'd been working on disappeared. We both eyed him with surprise and, on Grim's part, utter fascination. Her arms went trustingly around his neck as he swooped her off her feet, clearly at home in his presence. Grim plopped on to the bed with a giggle, nuzzling close again when he joined her. Her eyes widen and her head shook as he asked if she'd heard about the king of the castle. "Pirates?" she asked eagerly, fighting to keep her heavy lids open just a few moments longer. |
