The Main Event XXVII wrapped up the 2014 racing season at Sandusky Speedway this weekend. The Great Lakes Helicopter Main Event Racing Series (MERS) Super Late Models and the BioBased.US Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) Supermodifieds would also crown their 2014 Season Champions as well. Harold Fair Jr. is the 2014 MERS 2014 Season Champion and Trent Stephens is the 2014 MSA Season Champion, winning the title for the fourth time. The Modifieds were also back in action and following yesterdays heat races, the Modifieds ran a forty lap feature this afternoon.


The afternoons racing program started off with a 15 lap Consi for the MERS Super Late Models with the top six advancing to the 100 lap feature. Advancing were Dakota Carlson, Philip Bozell, Todd Carrier, Jamie Hunt, Tim Ice and Donnie Hill. The remainder of the finishing order was Nick Chmara, Joshua Smith, Bob Gainer, David Steouwer, Bud Perry, John Flynn and Bryan Clay.


The Modifieds were the first feature race as there were twenty five Modifieds taking the green flag. Norm Taylor and Ryan Fleming paced the field to the green. Fleming held the early lead followed by Taylor, Kenny Phillips, Stephen Klinect and Jordan Pruitt. The caution flag waved on lap two for a spin in turn three involving Jason Drew, Aaron Prater and TJ Stineman. On the restart Fleming led until a melee occured on the front straight involving Jack Jones, Joe Shannon, Brad Yelton and Todd Jackson, none of the drivers were injured. The race was red flagged to clear the track. Shannon was able to rejoin the race.

When the race resumed it was three wide as Taylor, K.Phillips and Fleming battled for the lead with Taylor getting the position. There was another caution for Brad Copen who spun in turn three. The restart saw another spin involving Klinect in turn two. The front row of Taylor and Klinect were sent to the back of the line up since both drivers would be charged with bringing out the caution flag. The restart saw Fleming and K.Phillips in the front row. Fleming led followed by Pruitt, K.Phillips, Doug Meyer and Matt Marlowe. Travis Eddy advanced into the top five on lap nine.

The restart saw the leader Fleming being sent to the pit area for leaking water from the radiator. The front row would now be Pruitt and K. Phillips. Pruitt led followed by Meyer, K.Phillips, Eddy and Marlowe. At the halfway mark Pruitt had a comfortable six car length lead over Meyer who was followed by Eddy, K.Phillips and Marlowe. Pruitt would encounter lapped traffic in the closing laps as Eddy had caught up to the leader. Eddy did not have enough to get past the leader as Pruitt took the checkered flag.



The BioBased.US Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) Supermodifeds were pushed out on the front straight for driver introductions before the start of their forty lap feature. In the front row it was Jon Henes and Matt Marlowe with Henes taking the lead. The caution flag was out on lap two when Mike McVetta spun coming out of turn four on the front straight. McVetta had a problem with his brake calipers and was out of the race. The line up for the restart was Henes, AJ Lesiecki, Marlowe, Dave McKnight and Charlie Schultz.

The race was red flagged with one lap scored for track repairs on the front straight. When racing resuned it was Henes leading on the restart followed by Lesiecki, Schultz, Dave Shullick Jr. and McKnight. The caution flag waved on lap four when Kevin Jaycox Jr. spun coming out of turn four. Schultz took to the outside on the restart and took second and was challenging Henes for the lead. The caution flag came out on lap seven when Larry Lehnert spun in turn one.

The line up for the restart was Henes, Schultz, Lesiecki, Shullick Jr., and Trent Stephens. Shullick Jr. dove low to advance to third as Schultz challenged Henes for the lead. Henes pulled away to a six car length lead. Shullick Jr. would now challenge Schultz for second. The caution flag came out on lap nineteen when Jaycox Jr. spun coming out of turn four, leaking oil and was sent to the pit area. The running order at the halfway mark was Henes, Schultz, Shullick Jr., Stephens and Kyle Edwards. Shullick Jr. took second on lap twenty three. Danny Shirey spun coming out of turn four on lap twenty nine. This restart saw both Henes and Shullick Jr. spin coming out of turn four, both sent to the back of the line up, however Shullick Jr. went pitside, out of the race.

The restart saw Schultz with the lead followed by Stephens, Edwards, Jim Paller and Davey Hamilton Sr. On the last lap coming out of turn four, Stephens made his move to the outside and challenged Schultz and took the lead as the checkered flags waved.Trent Stephens not only won todays MSA forty lap feature race but also became the 2014 MSA Champion, winning the title for the fourth time.



The Great Lakes Helicopter Main Event Racing Series (MERS) Super Late Models were lined up on the front straight for driver introductions as the MERS 100 lap feature race would start twenty four of the outlaw bodied Super Late Models. Andy Bozell and Jimmy Carter paced the field to the green flag woth Bozell taking the early lead followed by Carter, Marcus Malcuit, Alexander Rosenberry and Jeff Ganus. The caution flag waved on lap two when John Flynn spun coming out of turn four. The restart saw Carter take the lead coming out of turn four just before another caution flag for Chad Finley who slowed and had front end problems and was out of the race. There was debris in the middle of turn one, which resulted in another caution which resulted in Harold Fair Jr., John Flynn, Jack Brent, Drew Charlson and Scott Hantz making contact with the front straight wall and guard rail. None of the drivers were injured and the race was red flagged.

When the race resumed with three laps scored it was Bozell leading followed by Carter, Rosenberry, Jeff Ganus and Malcuit. Alexander spun on the front straight on lap seventeen. This restart saw Bozell with the lead followed by Ganus, Carter, Brian Bergakker and Malcuit. Bozell and Ganus pulled away from third place Carter by a half straightaway. Bergakker and Malcuit rounded out the top five. The leaders were getting into the back markers when Bryan Clay tangled with Tim Ice on the backstraight bringing out the caution flag on lap thirty eight. Ganus took the lead on the restart followed by Bozell, Bergakker, Carter and Malcuit.

Bryan Clay spun in turn four on lap fourty one for another caution. Tim Ice and Donnie Hill both spun on the restart off of turn one. This restart saw a major collision on the back straight involving Marcus Malcuit and JR Roahrig. The race was red flagged immediately, both drivers were not injured. When the race resumed it was Bozell taking back the lead followed by Ganus, Carter, Bergakker and Justin Schroeder. Bozell and Ganus had a half straightaway advantage over third place Carter at the half way point of the race. The caution flag waved again on lap sixty two when Schroeder slowed causing Harold Fair Jr. to spin on the backstraight.

On this restart Ganus would lead followed by Bozell, Bergakker, Carter, and Bud Perry. Ganus opened up a half straightaway lead by lap seventy. That lead was erased when Bergakker came to a stop in turn four on lap seventy four. After a series of cautions on laps seventy four and seventy five the race resumed. Ganus led on this restart and once again opened up an impressive lead over Bozell. Bozell would head into the pit area on lap eighty three. The caution flag was out on lap eighty eight when Stehouwer came to a stop in turn one. This restart saw Ganus again with the lead. On the last lap coming out of turn four Ganus would run out of fuel which turned the lead over to Jimmy Carter who would take the checkered flag.
