at his other school, they subjected hannes to learning the dark arts; it was a mandatory class for every student, one that he personally disliked because it forced him to harm innocent things. sometimes it was insects or small animals, but there were instances when they had to use curses on one another because according to the professors it was the only way to learn. hannes had never used the curses on anything or anyone, and they punished him severely for his disobedience on several occasions. one is particular had earned him a scar along his right forearm, which his grandfather saw as a disgrace to their family, but the family did their best to hide their disdain for hannes when he and his mother visited them on holidays.

perhaps that was another reason why he had dropped out of school, to someone like hannes there was no use in violence – in forcing someone into something. he held a very deep hatred for durmstrang that manifested itself when he witnessed injustice and hannes often got into scuffled defending things he thought weak. ísólf seems just as relieved as he does about not having to participate in the dark arts anymore and so hannes nods at him before changing the subject. the returned humor makes hannes smile, settle on his spot along the bench, it does not even matter that the other children look at them with wide eyes.

hannes watches as ísólf eats grapes for a moment before speaking again, this time in german, and it makes him grin lazily. there was something comforting in a familiar language, one that he did not have to think about in order to make conversation. he hardly cared if the other children were staring or not, or if they had more reason to now – he simply shrugs before he rolls up the sleeve of his robes and takes an elastic band from around his slim wrist. hannes uses it to pile his hair onto his head, listening as a greenhouse comes up and perhaps that they could go there sometime outside of classes. of course, it something that piques his interest, anything dealing with nature and gardening was always a topic that made hannes feel more in his element.

“i would really like that,” he says with a quiet smile as he tucks a strand of hair behind his ear, “i do not think i have ever seen the greenhouse here, but i have been inside many of them back home.”

he nods then before he sucks his bottom lip between his teeth, nibbling anxiously for a moment as he glances around the room. no matter how hard he tried, he doubted that he would ever fit in, at least not how everyone else did – he stuck out, sorely. hannes brushes some crumbs from his chest before he exhale and clears his throat, reaching around behind him to his rucksack in the floor. “i brought something for you,” he says then and he rummages around before he is pulling out a sketchpad and flipping through the pages.

when he finds what he had been looking for he pulls it out, sliding it over to ísólf – it is a drawing of lilja, the pony that ísólf had met over their summer meeting. “i know you liked her or whatever, so i took the liberty of drawing this for you. it’s okay if you don’t like it, or if you think it’s weird.” he wrings his hands in his lap then, looking down at the empty platter sat in front of him.
