It is with great sadness that I must advise you of the passing of Retired Detective Rick Olewinski, who lost his battle with cancer yesterday evening.
Richard Allen Olewinski was born on March 6, 1956, and he became a Tampa Police officer in September of 1979. He served in a variety of assignments (Patrol, FTO, Tactical/Vice, Legal/Forfeiture, and the Criminal Intelligence Bureau) before retiring in July of 2009.
Shortly afterwards, in August 2009, Rick returned to the City working as a civilian on the trusted protection detail for our mayor. Rick was probably the only person who could keep up with Mayor Buckhorn’s schedule, and he truly enjoyed his time in that position.
Having had the good fortune to have been trained by Rick when I first came to TPD and to have worked with him for several years in CIB, I can say without a doubt that he was an excellent officer, a true friend and a good man.
Rick is survived by his wife Vicki, daughter Kelly and son Jason. Please keep the family in your prayers.
Funeral arrangements are being made and will be shared upon completion. Replies:
