A great horned owl was sitting on a perch with a dead mouse hanging from its beak. It tilted its head back and swallowed the mouse in three gulps. Leaves were disturbed on the ground below the owl. It looked down, annoyed that the peace of the night was disturbed yet again by the canines of the mountain.
A large wolf-dog wandered the forest. The canine's coloring was similar to a wolf's, although an ashy gray not seen in the common variety, but the density of her fur was from the dog mixed in her blood, the chow-chow. Her mane was especially thick, parted in the middle by a leather collar with an inch of chain that dangled like a good luck charm. Written in an elegant font on the collar was the word: POPPY. Though large, the dog was thinning and exhausted. Her black tongue hung from her mouth. It could not be brought back into its cavern even if she desired. This forest had protected Poppy so far from dehydration thanks to the puddles of muddy water she could drink from, but its emptiness has taken a toll on her stomach.
Poppy found some grass to chew on, but had to be careful not to overfill herself, or else she'd end up vomiting later. The grass satisfied her stomach for now, but not her pride. Her lips flapped after letting out an annoyed snort. It was too dark to see, and prey was asleep in their burrows or bramble.
Overlooking her shoulder, Poppy snorted again.
"Far enough," she said. Poppy found a space in the roots of a spruce tree large enough to cradle her. She circled, then laid down. As she rested, her ears were swiveling and alert. Replies:
