html by dante for smooshie.
Hush was twelve now, though she didn’t feel it, or even look it. Amongst the trees, she could be four years old again, crashing through the leaves after a rabbit as deftly as she ever had. Her paws were sure; her coat was bright; her muscles were quick and eager, and her lavender eyes could still stun an unsuspecting stranger. One of the few hints to her real age was in the way she stared at the young male by the lake. Though he was young and well built (as she and Sen’s children tended to be), and winter was urging her to procreate, there wasn’t a hint of lust in her eyes. She watched him with a mother’s gaze.

These mother’s eyes were for Calyx, and she kept her place behind Reian despite jumping to her feet. His tail was waving through the snow, as if he hadn’t a care in the world, and she felt indescribably happy just to see him, just to know that he was nearby, alive and well. A smile crept across her face, and there was a flush against her skin, from head to tail. A pleasant wave of heat, then something else. It was familiar, and persistent, and she knew it had nothing to do with the sighting of her youngest son. Her cinnamon ears perked forward, and she tensed as the reality dawned on her.

Dante cast a shadow over her younger years; to this day, she could remember his eyes when she was the demon’s prey, and she could remember how drastically they’d changed under the force of his imprinting. The sound of his voice. The curve of his smile. The strange, uncontrollable knowing of him. All of it had burned into her memory. But he’d been gone for years, now; his face was slowly fading, and Hush had done her best to keep him out of her thoughts, lest she somehow summon him back. It seemed like he’d found his way back without her help.

She scanned the crowd once, and again, certain that she wouldn’t be able to miss the black bulk of Dante, but he was nowhere to be seen. Behind her then? She turned in a slow circle, checking the expanse of field and grass that surrounded her, searching for yellow eyes, red and black fur against the snow. When she should have had Reian and Calyx in her line of sight again, she found herself blocked off by a dark brown wall of a creature. Her eyes widened in surprise and she took a couple of steps back, thinking she was in his way, but when she met his eyes with a smile in her own and an apology on her lips she knew.

His silky voice came next, “My rose.

She knew in the same way that a bird knows when it’s time to move south. She knew in the same way that a bear knows to hibernate. It was instinctive and undeniable. Even if he hadn’t spoken, she would have known. He wasn’t Dante, that was clear, but she still didn’t like the way he was looking at her. She wasn’t certain he wanted to hurt her…but he wanted something., she was almost certain. His chocolate stare was intense, as if he would devour the features from her face, and he was massive, to boot. For all that, she didn’t cower, she didn’t run – she wouldn’t.

Years ago, before motherhood had taught her what it meant to be brave, she would be a blur on the horizon. But she wasn’t that girl anymore: Hush would die for her children on any day, and she wasn’t afraid to defend herself. Instead, she just watched him, took him in for a while, letting his words hang between them on the air before giving him her own lilting voice. “Hush, actually,” she said with a hint of correction; somehow she managed the words without even a slur or a stutter, despite the quiver she felt in her throat. “Who are you?” She drew herself up to her full height, staring up at him almost defiantly. She didn’t know how long her courage would hold, but she absolutely refused to let Reian or Calyx see her running home with her tail between her legs.

hush.
Gavriel, Delya, Kellin
Reian, Mireille, Roamin
Namira, Calyx
they sing in clever tongues
oh, how my knees go weak
