Jacopo came around slowly, and with apparent effort. This didn't bother Birch in the least, allowing her more time to drink in the features that had become so familiar to her in recent weeks. Though his grouchiness had no doubt been meant as a deterrent, Birch hadn't found herself dissuaded from her attraction in the least. There was something about him that soothed her, called to her, in a way she hadn't allowed in... just the right amount of time, it seemed. Just long enough for him to grump his way into her arms and, if she could get him there, her bed. Her lips twitched, those green eyes laughing as he glowered at her. Perhaps it was odd to some, that she found herself warming more to this familiar reaction than any tender smile some might have offered her in that moment.

She cut his growl short with her words, allowing her emotions to shine from her. Was there a part of her that shivered in fear, not of physical pain but of rejection? Of course, but it was a small part; the rest of her knew she had to take this step, had to reach out. She had to show him, tell him, how she felt. Her loss had reminded her of everything she'd taken for granted, had denied herself, yes, but... But there was a part of her who knew this would have come about eventually. They would have taken their own sweet time of it, she supposed, but she didn't want to wait any longer. She could have laughed at his expression, the frozen look of disbelief, had her heart not been thudding in her chest. Surely he hadn't been oblivious to her interest! Birch hadn't put much, if any, effort into hiding her growing feelings for him; in fact, she'd been more flirtatious with the man than she'd been in eons.

He was muttering to himself now, and Birch couldn't help but grin. She gave him time to think, though. This was new territory for them both, this step from friends to... something else, and it wouldn't be right to push. Still, when he spoke at last, she couldn't help but settle next to him, leaning against him as she nodded.

"I'm well enough," she answers truthfully. "Thanks to you." She adds this with a small and - dare I say it? - slightly shy smile. This fades though, her expression turning sad after a moment. "I was on a job and it... it went bad. I'll tell you about it, what I can, but just now..." She looks to him, head slightly ducked and expression hopeful but also nervous. "I need..." She hesitates only a second longer, finally blurting out. "You."
