Soljor’s patrols did little on days like today. The wind was setting in and coats were growing longer. He was focused on his girls. This was a dangerous time. It was season and as he had only covered Fly, there was concern. Then again, most of his ladies already tended children of their own and as such, he couldn’t expect them to all come back year after year.

He could hope though.

Regardless, that day, the wind carries an usual scent. It was male and it had Soljor on alert. His grazing had stopped and eyes and ears moved to discover what he could. He called to Fly and Magnus to watch things as he galloped off towards the beach. His white mane flew behind him as he made his way there. He heard the call shortly after.

A strange stallion announcing himself? That pulled the rage and fear from the painted boy’s heart. But not the caution from his movements or the business in his eyes. It wasn’t Felony he smelled, nor any of the Lagoon. He’d been expecting one of them to drop by sometime in the near future.

He came to the beach and saw first the stallion. A big equine, heavy set, but his coat was lighter. He must have come from someplace warm. The thing that drew his eye, however, was the white face. It was much like Magnus and Gandy’s. Lyden’s lead mare had left an impression on him. A good one. Another relative?

Then he noticed the mare. She was lighter boned. Like Mercury she bore a white mane against a black body. But this was not Mercury (as much as Soljor wished it was). Her rump bore spots. No. He had smelled the mare about lately. She must have been a new addition to Magnus’ group. She jumped at the stallion and Soljor suspected she might know him. Her words seemed to indicate as much.

He gave a low, deep call, and finished the distance between them. He looked at the mare and then back at the stallion.

“What is your name and business?” Soljor questioned. His ears were not buried in his mane. But the were back in a position of authority. His head was up and he looked the taller stallion in the eye. The Bay was his home after all. Even if the mare wasn’t his, she did sound like whatever history with the smoky black stallion in front of him was a bad one. He would be glad to step in to defend his second’s family if necessary. For the moment, though, he reserved judgement.
