far far beneath in the abysmal sea

In the days when they were still safe within the borders of the ridge, the striped girl's mother had told her that her father lived on the white island of Tinuvel. Since her dam was one of very few words, all the information she had was a name and place, Dögun and The Inlet. She often tried to picture him, sometimes as a slim but muscular stallion like Kasabian and other times wide and heavy like the draft they had met on the beach. At first, she chose to wait in the ridge for her sire to come to them, figuring she would go to find him if he had not come by the time she was a year old. The arrival of the mean, painted stallion had changed her plans considerably however.

He had demanded their relocation to the lagoon and Kraken had no idea why he wanted them there or why her mother agreed to his demands. Initially, when she had taken off after another foal, she thought that the lagoon might be good for them. She hadn’t had any other foals around growing up, she hadn’t really had anyone except her mother. The lagoon didn’t change that, the foal she had followed disappeared amongst the trees and she couldn’t track it down. Disappointed she had returned to her mother and the stallion who had driven them there. Kraken wasn’t sure what the stallion was doing to her mother, but she knew he shouldn’t have been doing it.

Taking off into the ocean once more, she made haste for Tinuvel. Her father might not have come for them before, but surely he could not reject her personal plea. They were not in trouble in the ridge, they had not needed him but thing had changed. The roan girl dragged herself up onto the pebble covered shore of what she hoped was the inlet, her green eyes scouring the area for any signs of her father. She did not see him (not that she would know him to see him). She did not see anyone.

Shaking off the excess water, she took off, galloping up the brae until she caught sight of three colts. She whinnied eagerly to them. ”HEY!” she shouted to get their attention as she covered the distance between them. ”Hey, you guys!” she called, drawing up to them breathlessly, ”Please tell me this is the Inlet?”
