Feist had never been so cold, she found herself thinking, strangely; even as the water got deeper and her breathing got more difficult, she couldn't shake the thought. She'd never considered death before, not as something that would happen to her, and she knew Mushaboom was probably dead and that Hollis was dead and probably Nike and Calico, but that she herself would die - it hadn't ever crossed her mind. Now, though, the thought was pervasive, as soaking as the cold water and with just as much bite. She'd opened her mouth to call to Calypso and the cold had gotten inside her, even, and it was panicky and paralyzing at the same time. And why fight it? the water seemed to sing to her; she would die, and she would be cold forever.

Calypso gripped her suddenly, the last thing she'd ever expected. This was some irony; the last vampire she'd let bite her neck had nearly killed her in more ways than one, and here was another to bring her to safety. She whined faintly in reply, offering a few meager kicks and paddles to help lift some of the burden off Calypso entirely, but the cold and near-drowning was exhausting. As Calypso pulled her to the bank, she regained some ability to flail her frozen limbs, her blunt claws scrabbling against the bank for purchase.

When she was away from the river she dropped to the ground, a far less graceful movement than her usual sits; her legs had simply given out. She managed to follow the instinct to curl up into herself, creating the near-perfect circle of dog she knew from long nights with the dogsled team - eons ago, lifetimes away. But she remembered the circle, and though she was soaked and frozen and exhausted she found a little warmth and comfort. For a minute that felt like an eternity the husky was alone and shivering, her cold blue eyes closed and her mind a fireworks show of bad words and self-deprecation: how could she be so stupid, so blind? So ignorant? She should have noticed, she'd been so sure-footed before and that's why she'd never be able to make it on her own, it was a miracle she'd lived so long...

Calypso's voice broke her thoughts like sunlight breaks up river-ice, and her sudden physical presence was more warming than any sun she'd ever felt. "C-Calypso," she said, turning her head to rest it on Caly's neck, shivering violently beside the ginger wolf. "I'm s-s-sorry," she stammered, her voice weak. "Shhhould have s-seen..."
