George G. Fosco, 85, of Sandusky, passed away late Tuesday morning, Dec. 30, 2014, in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born Aug. 28, 1929, in Sandusky, the son of George F. and Mary (Nardozzo) Fosco. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a truck driver for 35 years; for the last 24 years he drove for CCC Highway Inc., before retiring.
In his earlier days, George was an avid race car driver for many years and was one of the original builders of the Sandusky Speedway in 1950. Some of his accomplishments included being the 1957 Fremont Track Champion and the winner of other races. He was later inducted into the Fremont Hall of Fame. As he raised his family, George got into boating and other types of water sports. At the age of 59, he found a new challenge and love in life and took to running and biking. He was a member of the Firelands Area Running Club for 20 years and had run in different marathons and triathlons throughout the years.
George was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 83.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara J. (Wagner) Fosco; a son, Greg Fosco of Sandusky; two daughters, Mary (Rob) Desmond of Toledo and Gina (Patrick) McNea of Huron; two granddaughters, Maggie and Erin; two sisters, Dorothy Strasser and Virginia (Raffaele) Solvino; two brothers, Fred (Jo Ella) Fosco and Frank (Carol) Fosco; and nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Lucille Lazzara.
At his request, no visitation will be held. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for George at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Joe Steinbauer will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 83 Color Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870; Stein Hospice Service, Inc., 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870; or to the Parkvue Health Care Center, 2800 Boardwalk Blvd., Sandusky, OH 44870.
Arrangements are entrusted to the David F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky.
