Her clothes didn't fit like they should. No, that wasn't exactly correct - there was nothing wrong with the fit of her tunic, nor the clasp of her belt - but she felt like they didn't fit right. Birch frowned at herself in the mirror, her expression darkening as she found dark circles around her eyes - her dreams had been particularly vivid and strange these last few weeks, keeping her from getting the rest she seemed to need more than ever - and felt her belly give another twist. She'd already thrown up twice that morning, as she had every morning for the last couple of weeks, and was certain she was coming down with something, but no one else around her seemed to be infected. An infection, then. Maybe she'd talk to...

"Danny?" Birch said, surprised to find Torram and the younger boy standing in the doorway to her room. She smiled in welcome, only to find them both looking rather stoic and serious. Her heart flipped over in her chest; though Danny was always a little more serious than one would expect from someone his age, he always seemed brighter and more cheerful around Torram. His expression, and the way he was twisting his fingers together nervously, did not bode well. "What's wrong?"

"Danny has something to say to you, Birch," Torram said seriously. "Why don't you sit down?"

"Why do I have to tell her?" Danny whispered to Torram, who elbowed him in the ribs.

"You're the one who brought it up!" Torram shot back in an equally audible whisper. "And you're the medical student!"

Danny's mouth hinged open, no doubt to continue their not-so-subtle argument, and Birch rolled her eyes. Clearly it wasn't that bad, if they thought they could bicker about it as they were.

"Tell me what?" Birch interrupted, and the boys both turned to her with guilty expressions. Birch bit back a smile of amusement. "Come on now, it can't be that bad!"

"BirchIthinkyou'repregnant," Danny blurted out, as if the news would be better delivered as quickly as possible.

Sure she'd misheard him, Birch stifled a laugh. "What?"

"Ithinkyou're-"

"Smooth, real smooth, Danny," Torram said, smacking his best friend lightly on the back of the head. "Danny and I were talking about how you've been feeling lately, with the throwing up in the mornings, and how tired you are, and don't even get me started on the moodiness..." At Birch's admittedly moody look, he bit his lip to stop himself from rambling. "Well, it makes sense, doesn't it? You've been around enough pregnant people to know the signs."

"Don't be ridiculous, I can't be..." Birch trailed off, her expression growing confused. Why, exactly, couldn't she be? She and Jacopo had been together for a little while now and now that she'd become a fairy, there were no Fyren fertility concerns to worry about. She dropped a hand to her belly, her expression growing unreadable. "I have to go to work."

"Wait, don't you think we should-" Torram's voice faded as Birch all but ran from the house, slamming the door firmly behind her to prevent them from following her.

She was out of breath, and no more emotionally stable, by the time she burst through the door to the office she and Flynn, as captains, shared. He was out at the moment, probably checking on something, so she felt safe enough to drop her head to her crossed arms on the desk as she fought to recover from her... very strange morning.
