Ruieze Fields

Open fields and soft grass...
Ruieze stretches far in the midlands of Moladion, laced with streams that feed into Diveen and out of Asteraia at times. The fields are vast, filled with wildflowers and tall, soft grass; trees are sparse, as are rocks, but one can find small shrubs to hide amongst, and the grass itself. To the south of the fields, a Ruieze River widens, and the ground becomes sandy. There is a small, grassy island that can be reached from the banks, with water-birds often congregating on the island rather than the riverbanks.

He wasn’t easy to play.

She was learning that this one didn’t miss anything. He was intense, yes, but he was focused. He was composed. Everything he did was relaxed. Maybe he wanted her, but it wasn’t her that set him off. He didn’t know her. He didn’t care about her. She suspected that toying with him was probably an effort in futility – but it was her first line of defense, however weak it might be. As hard as she was staring at him, his stare was almost light. Effortless. It took in everything she gave and then some.

“If you say so, my rose.” His reaction was less than she’d hoped for, and she felt somewhat less beguiling under the indifference in his tone, but she smiled at the pet name and felt a little thrill in the pit of her stomach. Shiver was no easy flirtation, but he was pursuing her to a degree…and however disgusted she might be with herself, she was enjoying the attention. It wasn’t clear to Hush exactly when he understood the game she was playing – Shiver probably made the connection in his mind long before he let her know it – but before long it was written all over his face. He had smirked at the sound of her laugh, and that should have warned her first, but she took it for a smile and began to think maybe she was winning.

She was not winning.

In an instant, he was touching her, and she was on fire. Her whole body was engulfed in his nearness, in the intensity of the two skins that barely touched. His scent was everywhere, it was everything, and all she could do was stare stupidly up at him from the end of his nose, her jaw slightly open. She was struggling to keep her composure, to keep herself steady on her own four paws. She had to do something. She might run. She might throw herself at him and give him what he wanted, what her hormones told her she wanted. Maybe it really was something she wanted. No. But maybe. It was hard to think clearly. She didn’t know exactly what would happen if she broke now, but something told her it wouldn’t be good.

His voice rocked her, seeming to collide with his scent in a single entity that pulled her in further still. She didn’t move forward, but she didn’t move back, and she didn’t look away. But there was no defiance in her eyes anymore. She didn’t know what was in them, now, but they were beyond her control. They said what they would, and she just…stood there. Vaguely, she registered that he was possibly threatening her, but she couldn’t seem to feel any particular way about that. He was too close. She wanted him gone. She wanted him closer.

I – I…” she stammered at him, made dumb in their closeness, “Where?” The word came in a quaking tone, on a whisper. It wasn’t necessarily an agreement, but a vain attempt at buying time with desultory conversation. It was something to say. Movement finally brought her out of the cloud: Reian wedged herself between Hush and Shiver. Reality flooded back. She caught her breath, and then she knew it was time to go. She couldn’t stand to one side and let something happen to her daughter. It was easier to remember who she was, and where her responsibilities lie, now that she could breathe something other than him. She found her voice.

We should go,” she said, looking at Shiver but speaking to Reian. Hush averted her eyes from her imprint’s face – it was more than she could handle to look at him just now. She didn’t want her daughter to see whatever might cross her face. She glanced to Calyx, still blissfully unaware of their presence beyond the crowd, and then found Reian again. “I think it’s time we were home.” She didn’t allow any room for discussion; Reian was, of course, free to stay or go as she pleased. For her part, Hush turned abruptly and made tracks for Taviora while she still had the willpower to do so.
