harness your blame, walk through
Truth be told, Greer had rarely been spoken to in such a frank manner, perhaps only be her mother when she was young, and was taken aback. Her jaw dropped slightly and something in her chest clenched. She eyed Seamus suspiciously, her yellow gaze narrow and cautious. “Ah suppose so…” She nodded slowly, turning his speech over in her mind.
Seamus laughs to himself and falls to the grass, rolling. It is such a carefree and puppy-ish gesture that Greer’s eyes go from slitted to very round. The girl is unsure if the display of his stomach is a sign of trust or simply a lack of concern for any threat she might pose. She glanced down at her wounded leg and decided it must be the latter. She had never been very trustworthy anyway; she’d abandoned Aksel with barely a backwards glance, after all.
Hearing Seamus’s suggestion, Greer nods and gets shakily to her four. She’d completely forgotten that it was the birthing season. Puppies… She hadn’t seen a pup since she and her brothers had been small! Although, surely, the mothers wouldn’t let a stranger anywhere near them. Greer carefully took a step and found that though her bad leg was stiff, she’d be able to travel a short distance with only minimal pain. She nodded again to Seamus that they could go.
Greer padded awkwardly beside the dark wolf, following his lead. She continued to consider what he had said earlier, her expression thoughtful. “Seamus…” She began. “Ah ‘preciate yer help. But ah still don’t get why yer doin’ this.” Greer paused again and tried to organize her thoughts. “Ever’one in this world is out for ‘emselves. Ah’ve only had one..er…friend. Ah mean to say, we had an arrangement fer a while but that don’ last.” Greer huffed, frustrated that she couldn’t seem to get to the point. “What ah’m sayin’ is what’s in it fer you? What do yeh need from me when ah’m all healed up?”
The she-wolf gave him a keen side-eye, completely convinced that she was being polite to let Seamus know that she wasn’t expecting his kindness for free. She was completely confused by his suggestion of making friends. Sure, you made temporary allies; that was just smart business. But Greer’s mother had warned her against the pack mentality; it would only let you down. Even Aksel, who had loved his pack so much, had been cast out when he grew too weak to keep up with the group.
Greer limped quietly beside Seamus, her mind lost in winding thoughts.
