Remembering & Honoring Jerry Selmon

Dayton's own Jerry Selmon was the recipient of the Award of Excellence for ASA's Region 9 at the recently held Biennial UIC Clinic held near Oklahoma City, OK.

Remembered here locally by the 2014 Worth/USSSA Memorial Tournament, Jerry Selmon was one of Dayton's most distinguished softball figures.

From last year's Memorial ceremonies:

"Jerry Selmon was a softball man. A player and an umpire, this was a person who loved the game and put his heart and soul into excelling at every aspect.

Jerry passed in December of 2013. A graduate of Stivers HS in Dayton and a member of the U.S. Army, Jerry Selmon started playing the game in 1980 and was a key member of such notable teams as Little Kings, Budweiser/Faxx-V, Cincinnati Players, Louisville Stars, Slugging Vets, Solid Gold Records, Ram-West, Booher Blacktop, and Side Door Lounge.

With a career batting average around .650 as a switch hitter and the ability to play both outfield and infield equally well, he won numerous MVP and All-Tournament selections in a career which also saw 11 Dayton City Championships. A gifted athlete, he played baseball, basketball, and football all four years at Stivers H.S.

He excelled as both a player and an umpire, working for BASA and with the Greater Dayton Umpires Association and Kettering Officials Association for ASA where he was selected on numerous occasions to work at the highest levels of play, including two trips to the ASA National Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City to umpire National Tournament and for the U.S. Olympic team.

In a tragic twist of fate, Jerry Selmon was inducted in to the Ohio ASA Hall of Honor just before passing.

Jerry was also active in the community as a member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church’s male chorus and greeting committee.

Joining us today from Jerry’s family are Wife, Anita, and numerous additional friend and family members."

Our congratulations to Jerry's family and many friends on this well-deserved national recognition.
