She felt hallow, her sides sunken in. The absence of life moving within her body, but there was a part of Cae that was happy. She had dread the day that Zaida would make her appearance into this world. She was so afraid that she would hate her foal, but she had felt the opposite. She had felt love. She smiles at the thought. She had found a quiet clearing, close enough to the falls to easily find a drink, but far enough that she could keep her filly safe. She has warned away any horse that had ventured to close with a clack of teeth and a pair of pinned ears. Blue eyes fall on the pile of smoky gray fuzz and spindly legs, she contently sighs. At-least for the moment, she was asleep.
As her thoughts drift, so do her eyes. They fall on the pool of water, it was time to go and drink while her filly sleeps. She would be safe within the clearing, she has hidden her away in some foliage on the edge. She steps away from the filly, she would be gone only a few minutes. Her perlino coat, is a mess from the patches of dirt to the bits of blood caked to her hindquarters and hind legs. It had been only 3 days since the birth, but she had yet to find time to clean herself. She halts in the cover of the trees, she warily watches the few horses, she did not enter the clearing until the others had left. Just as she is about to step into the clearing, a buckskin stallion wanders to water's edge. He was familiar.
How long had it been since she had met him? How much had changed? She swallows hard, she steps into the clearing, maybe he wouldn't recognize her. Afterall, she was covered in mud, and her mane was in dreadlocks. She was not the same Cae. She quietly approaches and drops her pink lips to the water's surface. Greedily she drinks a few gulps, she even closes her eyes. She enjoys the cool liquid as it slides down her throat.
