Summer has turned my girl into a wild thing. With the warmer temperatures easing her pain as much as it ever can, she has taken to exploring her new home with the goal of befriending as many fairies and familiars as humanly possible before the winter months restrict her once more to the castle and her adoptive mother's warm rooms. Today we visit the market, a few coins jingling in my girl's pockets to buy ourselves some sticky buns. As she always seems to do, Grim's waifish appearance and undeniable sweetness draw a small crowd to us as we sit in the shade; in no time her little belly is stuffed nearly to bursting and several people have been added to her Best Friends Forever list (how she keeps track of their names, I will never understand). I stay close by my girl, preventing anyone from getting too close to her, and try my best to look intimidating even as I revel in the fact that only a few short months ago this would not have been possible. Grimbaud and I had been living on the streets, starving and cold. A whim brought us to the god, Mallos', attention, and from there came our meeting Ciara. Though I am wary of most fairies - particularly the adults - I cannot help but smile (just a little) when I think of her. There is a woman with kindness, a woman who cares for my girl as her own.

I am distracted by such thoughts, and the picturesque moment, and do not realize our group has splintered off until I hear a new voice. A voice I do not like at all. My massive head lifts, eyes narrowing, as I watch the man speaking animatedly with my girl, his grubby cloak tattered and spotted with various stains I need only sniff at to know: blood, and filth. This is a dangerous man, perhaps even an unstable one, and I see a glint in his eyes that sets me on edge.

"I can show it to you, if you like," I catch his whisper, and the gaunt hand protruding from the folds of his cloak in a beckoning manner. My girl, as innocent and naive as ever, starts to place her hand trustingly in his when I intervene. I step between them, the fur at my nap standing up as my lips peel back from my teeth. He stumbles back with a startled yelp, a jar falling unnoticed from his pack, and flees like the coward I knew he was. I chase him until it is clear he will not work his way around, then return to my girl's side.

I turn to Grim, a lecture on the tip of my tongue, and my blood runs cold... Like a curious kitten, she has found the jar and opened it; a thick mist of pale blue has escaped it, coating her, and she has gone still and quiet as death. I lick her face and hands gently, desperately trying to wake her. It seems like forever - just long enough for me to begin debating how I will bring her to the castle and Ciara - when she sits up with a cheerful little smile that makes me want to throttle her.

"WOWZA!" she shouts, drawing curious looks from the people nearby. Though I am relieved, my fear comes out as a heated lecture that my girl only listens to with half an ear. As I wind down, Grim interrupts (as I'd known she would).

"Okay, Gis, but we have to go to the dragon place!"

"The dragon-?" I ask in confusion, my mind still focused on the traumatic incident. She rolls her eyes exaggeratedly at me, as if I was the one not paying attention, and struggles to her feet. Before I can further interrogate her, we are off in search of the dragon place.
