At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

If I Look Back I am Lost

_________________________________________________________________________

The femme could sympathize with the younger brute who was clearly experiencing pain that he may have never encountered before. It brought back memories of when she had lost her mate and their pups. She never thought that she would be able to recover from the despair that had taken over her when that had happened, and she had fled from her pack. Not only had she felt the pain and sorrow of losing multiple loved ones, but she felt responsible for their death. If she had only stayed closer to the den she may have been able to help, may have been able to save them. Her three little pups were barely a few weeks old, had not even opened their eyes yet, and she had left them. It was only for a minute, only to get a quick drink of water, but that was all it took for disaster to strike, and for the world that she had grown to love and trust to be destroyed forever. Daenerys never thought she would get over that day, never thought that her life could ever have happiness in it ever again. But she was happily mistaken.

A few months later, Daenerys had run into Kahlan, her now dearest friend. The femme made her feel comfortable enough to try joining a pack again, and she brought her to SawTooth. Once Dany had met Moth she knew that it was the right type of home for her. It was clear that Moth cared deeply about each and every one of the lupines within her pack, and she had instantly made the gray femme feel welcome. She was just as happy Kahlan had been when the alphess had welcomed her to the pack with welcome paws. And Dany had never thought that she would be happy again, but here she was, many moons later surviving and happy in a new pack. And even if Rodan did not believe her she knew that he too would get over Kahn’s death and move on in life and be happy again.

Dany knew that the two of them may not have been close in the past, but she would do all that she could for him and she reached over to embrace the younger brute, understanding and sympathy in her hazel orbs. Eventually he leaned into the embrace and began to cry. She knew that he may be embarrassed to be crying, but in the end it would help Rodan feel better. Almost too quickly he regained his composure and apologized, speaking words that broke her heart. “I’m sorry. A warrior never cried.” She looked at him, sadness in her orbs as she shook her head. ”No, Rodan, that is not true. Even the strongest of warriors cry when a loved one is lost. There is nothing wrong with shedding your tears.” When she tried to tell him that he would move on and get past this he snorted and looked at her skeptically. "I may be physically strong, but clearly I am not so strong as I thought I was. A warrior never cries. I pity him if this is how I honor him: by sniveling and feeling bad for myself. He deserves better.” Dany knew that the words he spoke were ones out of sadness, but she really hoped he did not believe them. She stepped closer to him, hoping physical contact might help, but he did not move and she did not want to make him uncomfortable so she didn’t actually touch him. ”Rodan, Kahn was always proud of you. Everyone could tell that when we saw the two of you together. I know there is nothing more that he would ask of you if he was here.”

Rodan’s tone changed as he looked clearly at her, snapping almost, “Do not mourn him.” His tone caught her off guard and she didn’t respond before he spoke again, more softly this time. “He wouldn’t have wanted it. He - we, come from a military society. The majority of our people die on the battlefield. There is no way we can take them home and give them a proper ceremony. We mourn briefly, tears are not shed. I have gone above and beyond what is expected. At least he died an honorable death. He was always afraid he wouldn't." The brute sadly smiled a little at the last words before he spoke again. "I know that Kahn and I never really talked much about our past and while I don't know much about his I can answer questions. It'll help take my mind off things." The femme nodded at him in understanding. Knowing that sometimes a distraction could be the best thing in a situation like this. She sat down next to him, a little closer than she would normally sit, wanting to be near him to comfort him, but not touching him. ”I did not know that about you and Kahn. Why did your society need to be set up like a military? Were there wars going on?” Dany remembered the pack her and her mate belonged to, how focused on fighting and conquering they had always been and she wondered if it as anything like that. But right now it was about Rodan and what he needed.
