The risk provided by other predators had always been an all too real threat, particularly in the north. In a place so densely populated, bears could easily be forced out of hibernation and it was then that they became almost overwhelmingly dangerous. Cougars, on the other side of the coin, were always a consistent threat. Several times, she had encountered them and it had taken an entire group of wolves to convince the creature to leave - and even then, it had been hesitant to do so. Though she had no doubt the pack would have been able to have chased the cougar away if it planned to return, it was not as if she had been with the pack when she had taken the kill. She was alone, even now, as she dragged it across the plains. At least, for now, for she quickly discerned that others had begun to approach. She looks up only briefly as the smaller females, no more than children, circled about her. She recognized the pups well enough as a children of the pack's alpha, and as such, her position shifted if only to alleviate any concerns about her nature - Starshade had never been an overtly dominant wolf and it showed in her posture now. Her tail wagged stiffly for a split moment but she continued performing her work, dragging the corpse along in her wake. It was only when the pair of children paused defensively that she, too, stopped in her tracks. Instinctively, she dropped the prey instantly and rose to attention, her broad ears erect and body stiff with caution. She scanned the white landscape beyond, catching only what seemed to be the movements of trees or perhaps smaller scavengers. Still, the scent had become stronger now. It lingered more thickly in the air, so much so that a small growl bubbled in the back of her throat. For now, however, they still seemed to be safe. It was reassuring in a sense and yet, it merely allowed the natural stress brought upon by the predator's scent to linger for longer. Starshade could feel her skin prickle in anticipation and her heart fluttered behind her ribs. Thankfully, however, one of the children seemed to have changed her tune. She approached almost hesitantly, something that confused Starshade for several moments as she watched the girl curiously. Surely, she figured, the children would have been weaned at least last season - had they not tried this meat before? Her brows furrowed in contemplation, though she relaxed soon enough and took a sweeping step back in order to give the girl room. "Yes, this is for the pack. The meat is tender - try here." When she spoke, she swept around beside the girl, nosing towards the corpse's belly - there, the skin would have been the thinnest, and it gave instantaneous access to the best parts of the body. However, it also meant the three of them would need to make fast work of much of the initial mess in order to continue taking the meat further into the pack lands. It would not be safe to eat here for some time, Starshade supposed. For now, however, she had been happy to reach out and pinch at the skin, breaking it ever so slightly so that the scent of fresher blood might intrigue the girl further. Still, she cast her gaze back and forth between the kill and the wild lands beyond, her ears swiveling and twisting about constantly. "Prepare, young ones, to call for aid. This creature does not seem so willing to leave the area." Her words were hushed somewhat. Though she motioned towards Widow to join her sister, she took her stance beside the pair, now having decided to keep watch permanently. Her hunger could wait. She had not intended to take up the position of a babysitter of sorts but, at the end of the day, it would surely be part of her duties. |
