Gisli's sharp gaze turned to Maddy as she and Grim curtseyed to one another, waiting to intervene if necessary to protect her girl's feelings. Though her ill-healed leg hindered her in many ways, Grim never let it (or anything else, for that matter) get her down, and Gis wasn't about to let that change. Many were understanding, but there were those who thought nothing of making inappropriate comments, particularly when Grim was unable to complete tasks - like a proper curtsey - that many expected from someone her age. She relaxed once more (at least, as much as Gis ever relaxed) when Maddy only clapped with delight; she supposed, reflecting a moment, that she should have expected it from the woman, who seemed kind enough and genuinely interested in Grim. The little girl, oblivious to the temporary concern of her familiar and guardian, beamed a gap-toothed grin at her new pal.

Gis stiffened again, more obviously this time, as Nanook sidled closer to Grimbaud. She knew in her mind that the bear had no ill-feelings towards her girl, or it likely would have acted on them long before this moment, but her instincts, the maternal ones borne of their long relationship, told her to protect her cub at any cost from predators of any kind. With more difficulty this time, Gis forced herself to calm. Though Nanook opened massive jaws, jaws that could have torn her little girl in two, the bear's stance - resting companionably on her belly with front legs folded - reassured Gisli that the creature's sights were set firmly on the treat rather than the girl.

Grim looked confusedly between Maddy and Nanook as the bear gobbled up her treat, unsure what the problem was. For Grim, feeding animals - familiars in particular - was a daily occurrence, and she often ended up wasting half her meals in sharing, much to both her adoptive mother and Gisli's disapproval. Still, rather than becoming upset as some children might, Grim - her hand just slightly sticky from Nan's treat-gobbling - patted Maddy's hand.

"It's okay! She's a good polie bear," Grim said. When Maddy mentioned polie being a made up word, the girl gave yet another giggle, as if somehow both Maddy and Gis had managed to get it wrong. "You can pet Gis if you want, she's real soft."

Gis gave her companion a glower, looking rather intimidating, but Grim pretended not to notice. They were now discussing one of her most favorite topics in the whole wide world: Tristan. Grim scooted her way onto a nearby bench, legs kicking cheerfully as she chattered back in response.

"Oh, he's off with his papa, I mean, the King, the King Arthur, and they're at the Oasis cuz they're trying to fight off the big bad monster. I told Gisli we should just see if the creature is hungry cuz she's a bear - no 'fense, Nan - when she's hungry, but Gis rolled her eyes, just like that Gissy good job!" - the cat, who had rolled her eyes just then, sighed weightly - "Anyways, there are these real pretty stones we gotta collect to save the world, and I found one hiiiigh up on the dragon rock; well, really, Trouble got it down for me. Trouble's a raccoon, he's Rohmarr's familiar. Rohmarr has a baby, well, she's not his baby, she's 'dopted like I am, but Ciara..." the girl paused, glancing around for a second, before leaning forward to quietly try out the word she'd been dying to use for months, but hadn't quite gotten the nerve up to say aloud yet. "I mean, mama," Grim beamed, her whole body lighting up from the inside out with sheer joy. It was every bit as lovely to say that word out loud as she'd thought. "She says it's the same cuz love and all that."

"What sort of employment are you seeking, Madeline?" Gisli asked, speaking directly to the woman. Her gaze was direct but not unfriendly, and definitely curious. "Perhaps Grim or I can direct you to the proper person to speak with."
