between the rainbow & the rain

My heart splutters in its bony cage at the very thought.

It’s me, I am the reason she has gone.

Mother has been absent for a few days now and I am a little surprised that it has taken me this long to place the pieces together. Of course I have no solid evidence, but now that the penny has dropped her reason for leaving is blindingly obvious. It’s me.

I continue to graze through this epiphany, the clogs within my mind driving my jaw. Perhaps I spoke too often or asked too many questions, maybe it was my voice that drilled into her ears and drove her away. I rip another mouthful of grass from the earth and lift my crown away from these troubling thoughts, my young mind unable to process the very ideas it is concocting. My dark amber eyes flicker across the terrain as I empty my mouth. I bend to take another swipe at the earth but as I do so, a small, two toned frame catches my eye.

There is no mistaking who the boy is eyeing and as I straighten, it is pure instinct that pushes me forward. I skirt through the grass at a jog with the boy shadowing my movements, his painted body barely visible through the trees beside me. A mixture of curiosity and apprehension fills the pit of my chest- why is this boy following me, what could he possibly want? I intend to ask him.

Using my extensive knowledge of the Crossing I slip into the trees and disappear from the brutes view. Keeping the rhythm of a trot, I arch around and double back on my stalker. From his far side I approach, curiosity outweighing apprehension.

What is your name, lionheart girl?

His intense blue eyes keep my gaze, their beautiful colour sitting in contrast to his little face. Although I have called the crossing home since I first drew breath, I have never been eye to eye with another of my age. ”Well it’s not ‘lionheart’” the reply leaps from my mouth on the back of a chuckle. I have never heard the term used before, but as I study the boy I conclude that perhaps it has something to do with being strong and brave like a lion. My mother’s voice echoes in my head Think before you speak, little Zaida and for once I think she is right. ”My name is Zaida” I add a little sheepishly.

Do you want to see something beautiful?

The question seems a bit odd, somewhat random given that the handsome colt and I have barely spoken, but curiosity once again proves stronger than reason and a broad smile engulfs my lips. ”Yes please!” I accept his invitation with complete eagerness, my eyes widening as if I can already see this beautiful thing. ”Where is it? Can we go now?” I ask without taking pause. I have seen many a beautiful things here on the Crossing, I have explored nearly every inch and I wonder where this boy is going to take me. My hooves growing restless I begin to dance in place.
