THOTH & MORVEREN

The smoke trailing from the beaker was a rusty red, when it was supposed to be sea green. That was interesting. Thoth pulled his goggles off over his head and squinted at the liquid.

“I guess you do have to follow the instructions by the book,” he muttered to Morveren, who was skulking around somewhere near his feet. The water-fox was now officially too big to sit on his shoulders, and was now lamenting this fact after a long (and at times painful) period of denial. As if in answer, she made one of her funny noises and trotted off. Thoth didn’t even notice until she started scratching at the door. “Hey!” He scowled at her, temporarily distracted from his intriguing chemical. “Cut that out, you’ll get me in trouble.”

She didn’t, and a moment later he understood why. A loud knock reverberated around the room, followed swiftly by a voice which was unrecognisable through the door. Thoth hesitated, fairly understandably. It wouldn’t be the first time some of the boys from the court had attempted to gain entry to his little hiding place by pretending to be someone else. Usually they tried to imitate Tristan – unsuccessfully, since Thoth knew Tristan’s voice better than anyone’s – but sometimes they branched out into other castle residents. He would have ignored it, but Morveren was giving him a look.

“What?” He hissed in a low voice, so that no one on the other side of the door could hear him.

Morv, with the uncanny sense of understanding which she did occasionally portray, stood up on her hind legs and stretched her front legs up the door towards the handle. Thoth raised an eyebrow sceptically.

“Is it definitely Mordred?” He whispered. Apparently ‘Mordred’ wasn’t in Morv’s developing vocabulary, because she just gazed at him blankly. Thoth sighed. “Safe, happy, good?”

The vaporeon reached behind herself, grabbed her own tail and started chewing it. Thoth took that as a ‘yes’. Cautiously, he leaned over her to unlock the door, and nudged it open a crack. A quick look confirmed that it really was Mordred on the other side, so Thoth pulled the door open wider, his eyebrows lifting in surprise. Morv poked her head between his legs and gazed up at the baron, still chewing her tail thoughtfully.

“Show me what?” Thoth asked suspiciously, without inviting Mordred inside.
