Jezibelle flicked her ears back when the stallion addressed her as “my lady.” She was not used to being spoken to directly, nor with so much positivity. Impa could be kind, at times, but her older sister was selfish and self-involved, and had little patience for Jezibelle’s abstract conversations. Living on the Peak with her had been, in some ways, as bad as being ignored in the Forest.

“It’s safe now,” she told the stranger, referring to his wish to visit the Forest. “It may even be beautiful now that the night is gone.”

Night no longer brought comfort or peace. She associated it with black, which reminded her of Kisei, their tyrannical father, but mostly it made her think of the moon. Jezibelle could not bear to think of the moon.

Her ears flipped forward when the bay stallion spoke of his flowers as being nothing more than a myth. Her fairies might be no more than a fantasy to others, but Jezibelle knew better. “They must exist,” she said, and took one step away from Rurisk to bring her earnest face a tiny bit closer to the shorter stallion. “Why else would there be stories of them?” The roses did not sound familiar to her, and she couldn’t think of anything with a similar color. But calamity— she knew much of that. “Tragedy is widespread. I’m sure your roses are already in bloom.”

Jezibelle swung her head toward her brother. He was looking past her, relaxed but attentive to the bay male’s body language. She blinked, turned to regard Rodrigo again as he introduced himself. When she spoke again, her dark eyes drifted away from him to linger on the horses she didn’t recognize in the distance. “This is Rurisk. I am Jezibelle. I don’t know of any places that need protecting, but I do know children could use it.” Her eyes flicked back to Rodrigo, suddenly keen. “Children always need protection. They can be found anywhere.”

Behind her, Rurisk shook out his mane and dropped his head to graze again, stepping away from his sister and Rodrigo as he continued his slow, meandering path across the Falls. Jezibelle glanced at him, took one step as she prepared to flank him again, then paused. “Those roses,” she said as she looked again at Rodrigo, though her eyes roved the strong curve of his neck and the muscles of his chest rather than lingering on his face. “What are they for?”
