At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Find Me In The Darkness

That day by the waterfall had been utopia.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He had shifted til his form encompassed her smaller bodice, his plume entwined with her hind limbs. They had been inseparable, and though any observer would have been able to tell clearly that there were two wolves lying together, they would be hardpressed to tell where one ended and the other began. Even their pelts had combined. For long minutes they had remained like that in silence, their breaths matched each moment, and the rest of the world fell away until the titan broke the peaceful quiet with his deep vocals.
There is so much more out there. Athene's pupils constricted quickly and she sat up, looking around slightly, feeling vulnerable in her current position. Each day was a battle for her to go against the strict indoctrination that her father had ingrained within her soul. Love was something he had not understood and had taught her to avoid. Even now, she was wondering why they had abandoned their pack lands. They had jobs to do. They had sworn their loyalty to the pack. But as her sharp honey gaze swept the land around them she realized that they were still alone. There was no danger. This was their own perfect paradise... and she closed her lids relaxing back against him. How should we spend our time, today? A thin beam of sunlight managed to eek through the very tops of the trees, gleaming off the surface of the cascades, making the water glitter. What were they to do today? Athene inhaled deeply and rolled, turning to face him, burying her face in his chest, utter darkness coming over her vision.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That had been how they had spent that day - and the next, and the next, and the one after that. Eventually, and only out of necessity when the sky had darkened and had rained a torrent down upon them, they had dug out a cozy den under the fallen tree. It was large enough only for the pair of them, which as far as Athene was convinced was fine. There would never be a need for more space, for she never wanted to have pups get in the middle of them. Call her selfish, but Athene never wanted their love blackened. She never wanted to share the affection he had for her. He was hers, and only hers.

The femme had lost track of time, for the pair had remained together day after day. In the winter they were each others blankets. When they were hungry, they hunted together. When they were thirsty, the traveled the few feet from their den to the water together. If they had been married, their life during those long, perfect, months would be the epitome of a perfect honeymoon, except that her and Zev never grew tired of each other. They never fought. Together, they were perfect.

But always in the back of her mind, she knew that something that missing. She knew this would not be enough of them for forever. Eventually, they would need to return to the world. They had made vows not only to each other, but to Andere Seite. And though it was quiet and empty, they needed to return home at some point. More than that, she knew that every day that they were together, a tiny spark of a thought entered Zev's mind of making new life... of pups. Perhaps it was simply a lack of a pack, or perhaps simply the natural instinct to make progeny and pass on his DNA... but she needed to prevent it from coming up. She didn't want to tell him no... but she also didn't want him to ask.

And so it was one morning when summer was finally beginning to appear, the sun blaring down upon their wet forms after they had dipped in the cascades to cool, that she opened her maw, speaking for one of the few times that day.

If only this were our world
I would stay forever here
Watching as our lives unfurled
Together, just you and I but I fear...

Her voice paused as she rolled from her back to her ventrum, crawling closer to him, a soft whine pulling from her lips as she neared him, nuzzling his cheek gently.

This paradise is not eternal
Eventually another will come
And then we will surely feel the pull
To return to our packs quiet hum.

Let not one break our silence
But instead let it be our choice
Follow the ruins of our trailed scents
To Andere Seite, where we will once more raise our voice.

She was not excited or anxious to return to the pack. To leave their solitude and privacy and return once more to the public eye... but it was time. They had had their time to bond with one another properly. They had been living in a dream, and it was time to wake up. They would still be together, but it would be where they truly belonged, not here.

It was time to go home.
