it would seem these monsters are men

all I knew were the stories I was told of monsters
and valiant men sworn to slay them.

Her blue eyes lingered on his face, quietly searching the expression which he wore. Abigail, as curious a creature as she could be, most likely would have pried further if Braylen did not change the subject. They had just met, she thought, and she’d just agreed to make this her home, there was no point in her prying too deep or trying to uncover private matters when they were but strangers. She would have all the time in the world to get to know him, after all!

Her smile returned, bright and wide, when he bumped her shoulder and spoke again. A bouncing nod of her head was given before she turned from the pool as well, walking alongside him where the path permitted, and falling behind him when it did not. Her gaze swept to the scenery as they walked, little noises of excitement and awe falling here or there – from how beautifully rich the colors of the jungle were to the parrots sitting up in the trees, it was all so gorgeous.

Eventually they made it once more to the beach and conversation took place once more. Abigail was ecstatic at the mention of more herdmates to befriend. Not only mares, but a child too! Abigail hadn’t been the youngest back home, but her father had not allowed her to share company with the other foals as he’d told her they were too far beneath them in social standing and Abigail had far too many lessons to learn to waste time playing. Why, even now, she was practically growing into an adult! She shouldn’t be as excited as she was at the thought of children to play with! She should be focusing more on the herd structure…

Only Braylen’s mention of the mare, Georgiana, stilled her rampant thoughts. She blinked and looked at him, gasping softly, “Truly?” She didn’t mean it in a rude or judgmental sort of way, but Abigail was surprised. She’d never met someone who could not see before. But another surprise was yet to come when Braylen spoke of Isobel being mute. “She can’t speak?” Asked Abigail, concern peppered across her expression. She had been having enough trouble imaging not being able to see the world, but to not be able to speak as well?

“They are both very brave, I bet,” she said, her smile gentling as she looked to Braylen, “I can’t wait until I meet them.”

it would seem these monsters are men
and it would seem these men fear their own monsters
