Preseason "Terrific 20" Team Rankings: Teams 15-17

17. Marshall

League: Northern

Varsity Returners: 1

Where they finished last year: 2nd at City Finals (18th at State)

Strength Rating: 4.5

Depth Rating: 2

Reserves Rating: 2

Projected Top 7:
Hector Garcia, Sr. (15:28/Pierce, 4:18/1600, 9:14/3200)
Anthony Simon, Jr. (4:55/1600, 11:38/3200)
Omar Alrafe, Jr. (18:46/Pierce)
Sam Thomas, Sr. (18:54/Pierce)
Max Payne, Jr. (19:08/Pierce)
Fernando Aguilar, Sr. (5:30/1600, 11:26/3200)
Tian Li, Jr. (18:57/Griffith)

Notes: Hector Garcia is the lone varsity returner from the Marshall team that went to state for the first time in school history last year. Unfortunately, they didnít show much either at the Frosh-Soph or JV levels in XC or track so it will be very difficult for them to match anywhere near the heights of last season. Many of their members also seem to only do either track or XC making their team a little unpredictable. However, City Champ contender (and possibly even State Champ Contender) Garcia will marshal his team on and will look to take advantage of a school that historically gets ninth-graders that can make an impact at the varsity level.

16. Miguel Contreras

League: Central

Varsity Returners: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7

Where they finished last year: 6th in Heat 2 of City Prelims

Strength Rating: 3.5

Depth Rating: 3.5

Reserves Rating: 5

Projected Top 7:
Dylan Garcia, Jr. (16:32/Pierce, 4:53/1600, 10:47/3200)
Domingo Gonzalez, Sr. (17:50/Pierce, 4:57/1600, 11:04/3200)
Victor Chavez, Sr. (17:43/Pierce, 5:13/1600, 11:51/3200)
Cristian Zaldana, Jr. (18:08/Pierce)
Josue De Simon, Sr. (18:12/Pierce, 5:31/1600, 12:14/3200)
Jesus Lino, Jr. (19:03/Pierce, 5:51/1600)
Daniel Aragon, So. (5:31/1600, 12:06/3200)

Notes: Miguel Contreras returns 6 of their 7 varsity members from last year and are favorites to win the Central League. Dylan Garcia had a great sophomore campaign in which he qualified to City Finals as an individual, but he will be hoping the rest of his team can join him this season. Gonzalez is a consistent, reliable number two, but they will need to work on their depth to have any chance of qualifying to Finals.

15. Eagle Rock

League: Northern

Varsity Returners: 1, 2

Where they finished last year: 6th in Heat 1 of City Prelims

Strength Rating: 5

Depth Rating: 3.5

Reserves Rating: 7.5

Projected Top 7:
Marcelo Ramirez, Sr. (15:52/Pierce, 4:27/1600, 9:44/3200)
William Alsina, Sr. (18:10/Pierce, 5:12/1600)
Neil Spencer, So. (19:04/Pierce, 4:59/1600)
Andre Simental, So. (19:05/Pierce, 5:02/1600)
Shannon Turner, Jr. (20:57/Griffith, 2:03/800, 5:27/1600)
Andrew Brooks, Sr. (18:48/Pierce)
Jose Valdivia, So. (5:14/1600, 12:17/3200)

Notes: City Champ contender Marcelo Ramirez enjoyed a dream junior season where he finished 8th at City Finals in XC and 7th in both the 16 and 32 at Track City Finals. Although only one other varsity member returns for Eagle Rock, solid freshman track seasons from Spencer and Simental are encouraging signs. Turner, the 800 m Frosh-Soph Northern League Champ this year, dropped 27 seconds from his freshman year to his sophomore year in the 800 and will be looking to translate his speed to cross country. With a good summer, Eagle Rock definitely has the potential to be pushing for a spot at City Finals.

Again, PLEASE inform me if a runner I listed is not returning or if I listed their PRs incorrectly. The next set of rankings covering teams 12-14 will be out sometime at the end of the week.
