A fascinating blog, thanks. Mostly incomprehensible apart from the excellent advice about rats and the good news about badgers.
But Dave: you admit "It fails to amaze me how these mathematical gurus come up with different clueing techniques." I suspect some solvers would agree - especially those who are forced to take a week off Listeners once every 3 months. Or perhaps you've left the word "never" out of that sentence?
It's quite clear that a number of setters use computers to assist with setting - in fact surely all do to some extent. I'm full of admiration for those who can produce their own programs too. All of this makes for more interesting puzzles.
Now, using computers and the internet to help SOLVE those puzzles is quite a different matter. But the ethics are purely for the solver's own conscience, I'd say.
