Preseason "Terrific 20" Team Rankings: Teams 12-14

EDIT: Thank you to Ben who informed me of some mistakes on the Cleveland roster which have been fixed.

14. Cleveland

League: West Valley

Varsity Returners: 3, 4

Where they finished last year: 6th in West Valley League Finals

Strength Rating: 6

Depth Rating: 3.5

Reserves Rating: 4

Projected Top 7:
Stephen Steinberg, Jr. (18:05/Pierce, 4:38/1600, 10:17/3200)
Ben Arrendondo, Jr. (17:49/Pierce, 4:43/1600, 10:48/3200)
Adolfo Amthor, Jr. (17:41/Pierce, 2:09/800, 4:50/1600)
Jeev Pragaya, So. (18:22/Pierce, 2:14/800)
Leo Morinaga, So. (18:52/Pierce, 2:08/800)
Isaac Becker, Jr. (19:11/Pierce, 5:00/1600, 12:10/3200)
Charles Balkcom, So. (19:20/Pierce, 5:26/1600, 11:09/3200)

Notes: Last year, Cleveland failed to make it to City Prelims from the ultra-competitive West Valley League, but this season, they are likely to be one of the Cityís most improved teams. Steinberg, Arrendondo, and Amthor will lead a young team that isnít projected to have any seniors in their top 7. Steinberg and Arrendondo particularly impressed among this group by finishing 4th and 8th respectively in the Frosh-Soph 1600 Final. To have a chance of qualifying for City Finals, however, they must improve their depth and close the gap between the front three and 4-7. All 7 are returning next year, but the Cavaliers are looking for success this season to carry over to next year.

13. Kennedy

League: Valley Mission

Varsity Returners: 2

Where they finished last year: 7th in Heat 2 of City Prelims

Strength Rating: 4.5

Depth Rating: 4.5

Reserves Rating: 3.5

Projected Top 7:
Raymond Lopez, Sr. (18:47/Pierce, 4:34/1600, 11:05/3200)
Alexis Palacios, Sr. (17:34/Pierce, 4:50/1600, 12:00/3200)
Joshua Alfaro, Jr. (20:22/Pierce 4:48/1600, 10:50/3200)
Erick Flores, So. (18:48/Pierce, 4:49/1600, 11:35/3200
Chris Escobar, Sr. (2:04/800, 4:51/1600)
Ales Palacios, Sr. (2:07/800, 4:46/1600)
Benjamin Murga, Sr. (19:39/Pierce, 2:10/800, 5:33/1600)

Notes: Kennedy is a team that has not been traditionally known as a good cross country team, but that could all change this year. They return 6 that have broken 4:52 in the 1600 and are led by Raymond Lopez, who nearly went into the 4:20s. This might be one of the best group of milers in the City, but they need to work on endurance over the summer to have a shot at Finals and make a name for themselves.

12. Reseda

League: Valley Mission

Varsity Returners: 1, 3, 5, 7

Where they finished last year: 5th in Heat 3 of City Prelims

Strength Rating: 5.5

Depth Rating: 4

Reserves Rating: 8

Projected Top 7:
Marcos Shente, Sr. (15:55/Pierce, 4:38/1600, 10:08/3200)
Javier Favela, Jr. (17:31/Pierce, 4:51/1600, 11:07/3200)
Aldhair Alvarado, Jr. (17:34/Pierce, 4:50/1600, 11:15/3200)
Miguel Suarez, Jr. (17:42/Pierce, 4:56/1600, 10:57/3200
Juan Ontiveros, So. (18:38/Pierce, 2:21/800, 5:17/1600)
Francisco Rodriguez, Jr. (18:52/Pierce)
Manuel Perez, Jr. (18:57/Pierce, 2:32/800)

Notes: Reseda narrowly missed out on place at Finals last year and they return a solid group led by Marcos Shente, who broke 16 and finished 11th individually. In order to avoid missing out again, they must close the gaps between Shente and the junior trio of Favela, Alvarado, and Suarez, and their fifth man. The battle for the Valley Mission title should be a lot closer than in recent years with Kennedy emerging as a powerful rival.

As usual, let me know if any runners I listed are not returning or have superior PRs. Next set of rankings covering teams 9-11 will be out next Tuesday.
