The Friesian mare stepped forward as Valentine reached them, lowering her head and stretching out her neck to bump noses. Her dark eyes were glittering with excitement and nerves, and a wide smile brightened her dark face.
Jetta’s smile was more timid, but her blue eyes sparkled with glee and laughter erupted from her throat when the stallion lipped at her mane. She twisted away from him playfully, then as she stood straight again realized with some satisfaction that she was now just about tall enough to look him in the eye. She could remember, as a child, enjoying being the smallest one in the peak and never wanting to grow up, but she had to admit that following in her mother’s footsteps height-wise was a great booster in confidence.
“It’s good to see you too. How are the girls?” Inka replied, straightening her stance and looking down at the stallion with a warm expression.
After waiting for his response, she took a deep breath and side-eyed her daughter. The girl’s pale face was open and expectant, and silently encouraged her. “Well, I guess I’ll get straight to it. We didn’t come all this way for nothing, after all... I have news for you – for both of you.” Her gaze darted between Valentine and Jetta to gauge their reactions, and she noticed that the latter’s happy expression had crumpled slightly in confusion. This is not the way I intended on doing this, but here goes.
