I'm 100% with Simon on this. I fell for the biblical red herring, which appeared to be confirmed by the centrally placed MISSIVE, and spent ages reading about John's letter in Wikipedia. I even found bits in the grid that looked promising but led to cul-de-sacs. In the end I lost interest and gave up the search. I didn't spot ELTON but even if I had, I might well have concluded it was an accident of grid construction.
I don't object to a red herring (having placed them myself in the past) but the absence of even a hint that the letters of the words were not consecutive strikes me as very unfair.
In what way does highlighting illustrate the theme? It doesn't look much like a rocket to me. And what does John Elton reveal in the song? Or does the title refer to what's revealed to the solver when/if the penny drops?
I agree the clues were good. For me that was the only pleasure to be got from the puzzle. Replies:
