I'm not sure what reading level they would count as, but the books that really got me OBSESSED with reading were books by Tamora Pierce. They have great female heroines, too, and they're older books for the most part so, at least here in the US, I found most of my books at secondhand shops and stuff.

These include:
- The Immortals series
- Song of the Lioness series
- Protector of the Small series**
- Beka Cooper series**
- Circle of Magic series

** Protector of the Small deals with a pretty gruesome war including machines that require the souls of children to power them, so it may be more suitable for older readers/people with a sturdier constitution (it's really a brilliant series, though, my favorite!). Similarly, the Beka Cooper series deals with what is essentially a cop associated with a death deity, so I'm not sure that would be suitable for younger/sensitive readers either.

I also have to recommend Harry Potter, of course! :)
