Re(1): Name of 1950'2 player

According to our historian Mark K., the player you are referring to might have been Jose M. Garate Argoitia (Garate), born in Markina, Spain in 1934. He had played jai-alai in Acapuloco, Daytona Beach and two years at Tampa Jai-alai.

We are not sure about Garate hanging out with Ernest Hemingway, who later lived in a nice home in Key West on Whitehead Street - with all the cats.

But according to my research, Hemingway did associate with jai-alai players in the past. He even had Basque jai-alai players throw grenades at the German ships while he was in Cuba. He has been photographed with his pets in jai-alai baskets and has been known to attend jai-alai matches. So you might be right on that one! Hope this helps.
