Preview: Since Steve Calise of San Pedro did it in 2005 and 2006, we have not had a back-to-back Boys Champ in XC (?). That could change this year as Luevano enters the season as the favorite after recording a 4:19 and 9:09 in another impressive Track season. He could also challenge the 14:31 Pierce course record set by Pablo Rosales in 2008. His biggest threat will be Garcia who has excelled at State but hasnt been able to beat Luevano head-to-head at City. Behind him are the ECR duo of Estrada and Hazell along with Martin Del Campo will do their best to try to prevent this from becoming a two man race. MDC proved that he is among the best Sophomores in the State by qualifying to State Finals in the 800 and if he can use his impressive speed on the dirt, he will be deadly. Estrada did not have the best Track season, but ran a 15:34 as only a Sophomore, which is good for the 3rd best returning time in the City. Hazell is coming off a superb Freshman Track season where he really stepped up to a new level. To put into perspective just how high his potential is, he ran a 9:33 3200 as a Frosh. Luevano won the City Title last year with a 9:32 as a Sophomore and ran 15:01 as a Junior. If Hazell can show an improvement anywhere like that, he could surprise them. Whatever the case is, we are in for a great and possibly historic XC season.
