Luke grinned. He just couldn't help it, there was just something about his best friend that made him smile, maybe because Kane was so Kane and not the least bit afraid of showing it to the world. Luke might have intervened that day on the playground, but between Kane and Lucy, he really felt like he was the one who go the better end of the deal. When his dad up and left, it was Kane and Lucy who had stepped in to watch his back, to make sure he had food, and all those little things friends did just because they could.

Luke laughed at Kane's instant excitement over Sasha; somehow, he'd known that Kane would flip his lid over the pup, even if (so far) no one but Luke had been able to see her actual potential. Luke grinned again, about to speak, but Kane's progress through the free-roaming area brought on a whole new level of excitement and barking, bouncing bodies of dog interrupted any hope of conversation. Apparently reading Luke's mind, Kane winged a muddy ball off in the distance. Like a swamp of fluffy locusts, dogs galloped off in every direction, barking wildly. Sasha squirmed in Luke's arms, obviously hoping to join the game, but Luke held tight as he and Kane scaled the fence and escaped the dogs unscathed. Or, at least, he thought so until Kane's groan followed.

Kane's infamous book bag, always a point of fascination and a slight bit of wariness from Luke, made an appearance, and Luke did his best to contain Sasha in his arms. Now that they were away from the other dogs, her focus was entirely set on Kane, and she was just desperate to be his new best friend ever. Knowing Sasha, the puppy would no doubt want to crawl inside that bag of his, and then she'd be lost forever! He was about to offer his own pocket knife (which he probably should have done in the first place, but it was so fun seeing all the miscellaneous goodies Kane managed to store in that thing, he thought with a bit of a mischievous grin) when Kane retrieved it. One of the reasons Luke and Kane were such good friends was because Kane liked to talk - a lot - and Luke was a pretty good listener; they balanced each other out, that way.

"Uh huh," Luke said, finally releasing Sasha, as Kane talked. The puppy bounced around the boys' ankles like an oversized bunny, all wiggles and wags and eagerness. Deciding to humor his best friend, Luke leaned against one of the nearby kennels and crossed his arms over his chest (his "cool guy" pose) and grinned. Talk of how he'd aquired Sasha would no doubt come up eventually anyways. "What did Lucy do this time?"
