A Slim Silver Lining

Barely a breeze stirred Nim's auburn hair and sweat beaded at the back of her neck. Nim knew the heat was poised to sink into autumn and it reminded her of days long lost. She rarely dreamed anymore, but she wished she would have dreams of the fire painted north land, Cape Breton aglow before the onset of winter. It used to be like poking a wound, scabbed over, but red at the edges. Now she found a scar. Nim took a breath that threatened to catch and found it easier to keep the good times in mind and bring such memories into harmony with the beauty currently around her.

Harmony. That was a new thing to her life. It hardly seemed fitting, but there was a growing comfort in the pattern of her days. The studies set by the political teacher, Versya Raleigh, were bold and found Nim at the castle frequently. Slowly Nim found herself growing more comfortable. What a far cry wandering the halls of a real stone castle were from the days she would lace up hiking boots to find some distant beach her destination, building sand castles until the tide came in. As a social being, Nim found watching others at court helped her to slowly understand the rules and expectations without getting caught up in any controversy just yet. Still, she felt like an outsider to the people here. Especially those that had grown up on Shaman seemed to have an advantage, never comparing mismatching Shaman politics with Earth politics like Nim did.

No longer dressed for court Nim wandered the gardens in a simple amber dress, traced with vines at the hem and waistline, a simple straight cut thing with a tie at the back of her rib cage to add form and falling just to her knees for this hot weather, its emerald curls sprouting out further into the dress. It was much brighter than she usually wore and she felt the pattern distracting, but someone had mentioned she ought to wear color a bit more. Nim hummed a little tunelessly as she remembered her encounter in the marsh with Whimsy. Yes, she had begun her journey to real change somewhere in that frightening place and Nim stroked the budding confidence she had found.

Nim paused and frowned, finding herself a bit turned around as she hadn't visited the garden much. She turned, rubbing her hands along her dress. It really wasn't a big deal to be lost among such beauty, for the gardens weren't so large as all that. Still, it sent an uncomfortable niggling zing up Nim's spine. Just when she found herself getting overly comfortable... Nim came around another turn and happened on a scene that made her smile. One little purple covered young courtier and a great cat seeming ready to twitch its tail in annoyance. Of course Nim liked children, never seeming to mind the mess, There was something about their innocence, the cleanliness of their thoughts and intentions, that made up for all such messes. Of course it might mean another ruined outfit.

"Why, hello there!" Nim said with a great deal of cheerfulness, none of it forced, "Those look delicious." She knew the girl would probably have been warned about strangers, but they were in a fairly safe place at the castle and Nim didn't intend to be a stranger for very long, "My name is Nim." She looked from the girl to the jaglion. Glancing at the bush Nim plucked off a couple of berries to try in order to join Grim, "Mmm." Her golden, transparent, dragonfly wings fluttered, emphasizing her delight.
