Preseason "Awesome 18" Girls' Team Rankings: Teams 16-18 IP: 126.96.36.199 Posted on August 8, 2015 at 04:00:41 PM by foreverfaster
(1): Hamilton's loss is Venice's gain as Caitlyn Butze transferred which dampens Hamilton's outside hopes of making it to City Prelims.
(2): Eagle Rock also increases its strength with the return of Jennifer Martinez who I seemed to miss while doing the rankings. Their coach also has informed me of some hurdlers that have a good chance of making it to the top 7.
(3) Eagle Rock drops to 17th with the rise of Venice in the rankings.
(4) NoHo drops to 16th with the rise of Venice in rankings.
Narbonne- They will be led by Senior Isabel Gutierrez whose 19:20 PR is actually the 3rd fastest returning time at Pierce making her a legit City Champ contender. Unfortunately only two others are returning according to athletic.net, but both are sub-21:22. If they can add any sort of depth they can shoot up these rankings.
Hamilton- Hamilton did not qualify to City Prelims last year from the Western League, but they could be very competitive this year as they had 2 F/S sub-6:00 in the 1600. They too will need to address their issue of depth over the summer.
Garfield- Led by Angelica Ramos (12:39/3200), Garfield has a very young team with plenty of Sophomores. If they can develop more, they can match their counterparts and surprise a few teams.
Reseda- Reseda returns a decent group but had good development from a couple of Frosh in Track. They too can rise in the rankings with a good summer.
League: West Valley
Varsity Returners: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6
Where they finished last year: 6th at West Valley League Finals
Notes: Madeline Page returns with the 4th best returning time at Pierce and should be in contention for the individual title. Her team, however, didnít qualify for City Prelims from the incredibly strong West Valley League, but probably would have if they competed in any other league. They had a decent Frosh group last year that should all be in the top 7 with Alonzo and Sandoval showing improvement while recording similar times in Track. The fact that they both almost broke 6 indicates they are in line for big PRs in XC. Their wild card could be Lorenzana who was the F/S 800 m Champ in Track with a 2:30. If she can develop some endurance along with her unquestionable speed, that should improve some much needed depth.
17. Eagle Rock
Varsity Returners: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Where they finished last year: 5th in Heat 2 of City Prelims
Notes: Eagle Rock returns their top 6 from last year and will be led by the Jordyn Turner, Paloma Camacho, and Jennifer Martinez, who is returning after battling a case of mono in XC. Turner was among the best Frosh in the City last year as she broke 21 and continued to impress in Track where she was the only 9th grader competing at the Varsity level in the 800. Camacho also excelled and qualified for the F/S 1600 and 3200 m Finals. If the rest of the group can close the gap on the front three, Eagle Rock has a chance of qualifying for City Finals.
16. North Hollywood
League: East Valley
Varsity Returners: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Where they finished last year: 7th in Heat 1 of City Prelims
Strength Rating: 4
Depth Rating: 3.5
Reserves Rating: 6.5
Projected Top 7:
Amber Flores, Jr. (21:22/Pierce, 2:37/800, 5:45/1600)
Maralyn Batz-Paz, Sr. (21:33/Elysian, 5:48/1600, 12:53/3200)
Joyce Kang, Jr. (22:20/Mt. Sac, 2:40/800, 6:06/1600)
Lisette Avila, Jr. (14:01/3200)
Chiara Berruto, Jr. (22:46/Pierce)
Tara Aiache Reynaud, So. (22:50/Pierce)
Gabby Castro, So. (22:59/Pierce)
Notes: The Huskies donít have the best XC times, but strong performances in Track indicate that they should be able to come up much better this season. Amber Flores and Maralyn Batz-Paz improved in Track and managed to qualify for City Prelims in the 800 and 1600 and 1600 and 3200, respectively this past season and will be expected to lead this young team. A number of runners from last yearís F/S team that placed 6th at City Finals will be expected to make the step up to Varsity and will add to the 5 returning this year. With only one projected Senior, this team has a two-year window to qualify for City Finals and is a team to watch.
The next set of rankings will cover teams 12-15 and should be posted on Monday. Replies:
