There is no better way to know us
than as two wolves, come separately to a wood
“Where did you come from?” Sinopa asked, straight off the bat, shifting her stance a little, their shoulders bumping. Both secretly loved hearing about all kinds of places, considering that until just recently, they’d never strayed far from home. The bay mare flicked her tail, and then spoke again, adding to her previous question. “I mean, if you haven’t always lived here on the islands.” She glanced aside, eyes sweeping the area, a curious movement, as opposed to Tolinka’s alert and cautious observations of this strange land.
“We came from a plains herd on the mainland, very far away. We were born there, and only recently left.” One question down, and it seemed that Sinopa was answering her questions herself as she went along, perhaps because it would benefit the stallion in a small way… By helping him in turn get to know them better, for this was what they both wanted (much to the surprise of both sisters – lately, there hadn’t been many males they felt they could trust). But, it was just as likely that Sinopa was speaking because she liked the sound of her own voice, and was sure Psychedelic did too.
“Why are you here?” Tolinka rumbled, her voice low and rough, beating her sister to the second question.
Sinopa snorted and lifted her head to send a look over the stallion’s head. “Yes, like Toli said, why are you here, huh? Don’t like being on your own? I mean, without your brothers. Other stallions. I know I’d hate not to have her around, even if she is annoying sometimes.” She said the words with a smile, and her tone made it clear that she was just teasing the other mare. There were still no signs of other stallions, and a sudden thought made the bay mare frown.
“Are you on your own?” Come to think about it, most of the scents she had caught were a little on the stale side. “Don’t worry,” she continued softly, her muzzle close to the skin of Psych’s neck. “You can stay with us as long as you want, okay? Friends and family have to stick together!” A short, firm nod. “Speaking of, that’s why we came here. Our parents were both born here. Not quite sure where on the islands exactly... I forgot, but I do remember that our grandfather on mother’s side lived here in the Lagoon, at least for a while. S’why we came here first.”
“Good place to hide, these islands,” Tolinka murmured quietly.
Sinopa turned an ear back, once again speaking as soon as her sister fell silent once more. “Yes, and well, we just wanted to see these islands for ourselves, you know? After hearing so many stories of them… I can’t wait to visit them all!” Silence settled upon them, the dark mare suddenly having nothing to say, no idea what to ask as her final question. She seemed a little unsettled, not quite all there. It was Tolinka who broke it, with her soft husky voice.
“What do you want, Psych?”
Sinopa stirred at her sister’s words, and leaned against the stallion that stood between them. “Do tell us, Psychedelic,” she purred, back to her usual cheeky self. “Perhaps we can help you. If nothing else, you can count on us for a good time.” A devious smile turned up the corners of her lips. “Let’s do something fun, Psych. Or cause trouble somewhere.” She nudged his white and gold shoulder with her brown muzzle, her dark eyes dancing with delight. “Your choice.”
