McCune Goes to Spitzer Victory Lane in AVSS Competition
Jimmy McCune finally got to the race lead with five laps to go at the Spitzer Motor Speedway of Mansfield, Ohio and sailed to a long awaited victory in the Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints' return to Mansfield. McCune had won in 410 sprint competition before at the wicked-fast half-mile but when the track finally reopened after being shut down for several years and the Auto Value Super Sprints' were scheduled for the high banks, everyone knew the race was going to be special.
And special it was as fifteen of the world's fastest short track racecars descended upon mid-Ohio for thirty laps of open wheel mayhem. Aaron Pierce would set fast time of the afternoon with a lightning-fast tour of the monstrous half-mile at a lap time of 13.283 seconds in the Sam Pierce Chevrolet #26. Cody Gallogly and Dave Baumgartener won their eight lap heat races.
John Turnbull Jr and Cody Gallogly would pace the field of methanol-burning winged warriors to the green flag. Gallogly would immediately blast away to the lead in the #71 Coffey Plumbing and Heating machine as Turnbull began slipping back. Jimmy McCune would take the runner-up position in turn four on the very first lap from Turnbull. NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour pilot Bobby Santos III would assume the third position from Turnbull on lap two with six-time champion Jason Blonde following through for fourth in the Bingham Farms/Sweet Manufacturing #42.
Kyle Edwards would bump Turnbull from the top five on lap three but would immediately come under fire from Aaron Pierce, who would take the fifth position in turn four on lap six. Pierce would blow a left rear tire in turn two at the halfway point in the race, resulting in the race's first caution flag so he could go to the pits and exchange themammoth Hoosier Racing Tire slick. Gallogly would now lead McCune, Santos, Jason Blonde and Dave Baumgartener back to the green flag. Pierce would have more problems on the restart as he and a fellow open wheel legend, "the Speed Freak" Kevin Feeney, would tangle in turn one, ending Pierce's night.
Bobby Santos III would take the runner-up position on the restart in turn four. McCune would collect himself and take the position back on lap twenty in turn four. He would then continue his race-long pursuit of Cody Gallogly and the race lead, which he would take with five laps to go. McCune would go on to win over Gallogly, Santos, Blonde, Baumgartener, Edwards, Turnbull, Frank Neill, Mike Stutsman, Feeney, Brian Gibbs and Joe Speakman.
