I do not have any shame about my size. I do not feel bad that I cannot hunt a bull elk on my own, let alone two of the beasts. I scattered quickly upon their arrival to our little meeting but the darker girl rushed forward, her teeth snapping violently at their hooves. I watched in horror as the two brutes continued to fight around her, threatening to do more damage to her than to each other. She looked so wild and… kind of crazy, as her yellow eyes glared at the elks. She called to me, telling me something about how their blood would be ours or something but I ignored her as I ran. It wasn’t until she asked me where I was going that I turned to look, my blood freezing in my veins. The antlers were coming down towards her and she either didn’t see them or didn’t care. I wasn’t sure which one but it didn’t matter.
I barked at her, trying to call to her as my claws dug into the earth. My paws carried me faster than I thought I could run towards her. Why wasn’t she moving?! The dangerous weapon was still coming down, like time had slowed somehow, and I didn’t feel like I was going to make it in time. I didn’t think about it. It just happened on its own. ”RUN!” I screamed. It was odd hearing my voice again after so many years. It still sounded the same, but slightly more mature. At that moment, I didn’t know how to feel about breaking my vow to my father but I knew I couldn’t think about that for now.
She still hadn’t moved and I knew that she could get hurt if those horns came crashing down on her. However, it seemed I would be just in time. I didn’t stop or slow down to see if she had finally moved out of harm’s way. But if she hadn’t, I hoped my body collided with hers. If impact had been made, I knew that the force behind my blow would be enough to send her flying away from the elk’s massive head. But I didn’t have time to move myself out of the way. I felt the antlers take me by the side, feeling a few ribs crack under pressure, and sending me flying a few feet away. I landed hard on the ground and rolled into the safety of one of the many caves around the area. I didn’t dare move. It hurt too much. I couldn’t breathe either. I just lay there, listening to the grunts and moans of the bulls as they continued with their scuffle, completely oblivious as to what they had just done. I hoped my new friend was safe. I didn’t see what had happened to her when I had been hit. Was she alright? Did she see me fall down here? I whimpered softly to myself, both to comfort myself as I felt the shock hit and to help relieve the growing pain in my side.
