Many years ago I attended a Listener Dinner somewhere North of Watford and was on a table with a delightful silver-haired Listener setter called Shaun Wiley. I discovered that he had been both a classicist and a mathematician at Oxford and then ended up as Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. It was only a few years later that I realised that he had been an important member of the Bletchley Park team, when I saw him and his wife reminiscing about their time there in the first TV documentary to be broadcast after the secrecy had been relaxed. Alan Turing had seemingly contacted him while he was teaching maths at my old school, and persuaded him to join the team at BP.
Yes, I saw the Godfrey Welchman programme too. What a sad end to his glittering career. Replies:
