Free My Soul

Soft velvet ears perked at the stallion’s laughter and movement. The young girl had very little experience with males, colts or stallions, being surrounded by the ladies of the Vulcan herd. She had heard the others talk about various men in their lives, some with the bitterness of jaded hearts and others with open affection for the fathers of their children. Others talked about stallions and fathers as fierce protectors or companions that lived and died to stand by their herds. This man had a kindness to him, he seemed to have a gentle nature and was quick to laugh. It was not out right or instantaneous, but it was comforting to her and a smile started to grow on the girl’s dark lips. It seemed like he fell into the stallions that the mares of the Peak were pleased to be around.

While she followed the stallion her mind wandered to what happened to males who stepped onto the threshold of the mountain’s territory. Males were claimed as ‘trinkets’. She wasn’t sure yet what that meant, or if they belonged to the herd or the captor. Her little heart flared at the idea of bringing him to her home and having him stay to keep her company when she was lonely or to come with her when she wanted to explore. Her ears flattened briefly and she snorted. No, that would not do. The others of the Peak so often told her ‘no’, and she was expected to obey. She could not get away with the antics her friend did. If she brought Strack to the Peak she worried he would be taken from her, he would be broken and corrupted by the other mares of the Peak. Her expression turned more mild as she came to the conclusion that she would not try to take him to the paths to the cliffs. His was a kind soul that was to remain free.

He jumped into the water, splashing around and creating waves of droplets that went everywhere. Adelheid was so bewildered she stopped at the water’s edge and stared at him in astonishment. The adults almost never played with the children like this! Taytim and Taika chased each other around the mountains all the time, but that mare was barely out of fillihood herself! Now this stallion was jumping into the water! And his laughter convinced her it was okay! Her blue eyes shining bright with excitement she raced into the stream after his large form and pranced in circles around him. It was a dance she and her friends had stepped to so often!

He stopped his play and spoke to her. Eyes brightened even more to where her gaze was nearly electric blue. “Is that where the magic is hiding?” Her voice was breathless with hope and desire. “My sister always says the spirits are quite, and my friend chases fairies that I cannot see.
