Small white form had spent weeks wriggling and blindly romping as much as she could with the black shapes of her siblings. She could not see the world around her, but she felt the movements of her family around her at every waking moment. There was always comfort at their closeness, as well as a mild confusion when she felt her mother leave for small amounts of time. Deep in her unformed thoughts it was started be create an outline of what life was like and what was going to be going on in the world around her for the rest of her life.
For the first weeks of her life she grew as fast as any. When the opportunities arose she munched on her siblings’ ears companionably and roughed with them. The day she opened her eyes was the day the world exploded into its vast expanse to her. Somehow when her eyes opened she knew there was more to the world than the den she first saw. She knew her mother left their side from time to time, and their father was around yet not. There was more just beyond that opening. Just as she knew there was more to the world on the outside, she felt like it would be a very bad idea to wander off alone. After all, her siblings were here, and her mother knew where she was if she stayed put. Happy as could be and enjoying the company of her family, she contented herself with learning everything she could about the den around her, and engraining the scents of her brothers and sisters in her memory. Whenever her mother returned from Outside the little girl buried her face in Hecate’s fur, inhaling between feeding. Mom had a base smell that never changed, it was always present and always comforting. There were similarities between her and her siblings. She could tie them easily together and know they were somehow all one. But there were times she smelled of other things. Sometimes she smelled of other wolves, the musk and scents of fur that came from canine bodies. Inanna started to pick up on her mother smelling like things from the earth. Plants, flowers and dirt all smelled different on the adult’s body.
There was nothing particularly special about the day, but Inanna sighed and got to her feet, a feat she had only recently mastered. The white formed pup passes over to the mouth of the den and stared out of it with her still puppy blue eyes. Head tilted to the side she looked out of it as far as she could without actually leaving the threshold.
“What’s out there?” She finally asked, looking back at her mother.
