It have been near desperation that had driven the mare into the waters of the sea once again. The strength and the courage she had built in her time on the islands were starting to wither away into the uncertainty that had once begun to reclaim her life. After years of running and fleeing from physical dangers; stallions chasing her, mares envious of her, herds and predators seeming to forever be nipping at her heels, this time it was her own mind that drove her into the waves. She did not know where she ran, but she knew she was running from a stallion she did not know, and another whose reaction she could not imagine.
Winter made the waves rough and wild. The thoroughbred kicked out with all her strength, legs accustomed to running just as strong in the water. Eyes blind in confused panic she pressed onward. An island started to approach on the horizon and the waters calmed. She could start to feel the warmth of the tropic’s sun on her face. Exhausted she made her way to the sandy shores. Once her hooves touched the shore she pulled herself from the water and shook the moisture from her dappled blue pelt.
Her breathing was heavy, making her foal swollen stomach rise and fall even more awkwardly with each breath. Dark eyes looked around this new and strange place without actually seeing it. The sounds of a tropical beach lulled her tired mind, the birds’ songs singing the lullabies she would have normally sang to others. Zimri knew there had to be a stallion who called this place home but the winter swim and the weight of her child sapped her energy. Her body quivering in the instinctual fear she leaned against a palm tree, resting just briefly before she could start running again.
