Re: chess. It's partly about equality with other countries. Not cheap as a parent of kids who play chess for England whereas some other countries get paid for it &/or sponsored.
I think it may also make a difference in schools where rugby, cricket, tennis etc often take precedence over chess. Junior players are often denied a chance to play national level chess cos they have to play for school 4th team at (eg) tennis at last minute, letting down county chess team. Replies:
