The Mirror Knows Not

Saffron almost breaks down when Era runs to her the pups warm tongue washes over her hand and she feels a familiar moistness in the corner of her eyes. Amber eyes quickly blink it away before the tears come. She’s not going to cry in front of her big brother she doesn’t want the questions that will come after. It doesn’t occur to her that the tears could be written off as ones of joy at having him home again. Tears aren’t like Saffron not anymore. As far as Grayson would know she hadn’t cried since their mother left. When Serafina had abandoned them she’d spent so many nights crying her-self to sleep. She swore she’d wasted enough tears on that woman but thing have changed recently. After the omneity she’d wasted what felt like buckets of water on her mother. Never again, she was never going to waste her tears again. Instead she falls to her knees and scoops the pup up in her arms; her nose takes in the earthy dog scent as she buries her nose into Era’s fur. It has the advantage of hiding her eyes until she’s blinked the wetness away.

When she rises back up a little awkwardly from the ground there’s no trace of dampness left, no red in her cheeks that even gives a hint that tears had been at hand. She studies her brother with those amber eyes she notes the guilt in his posture and some part of her feels slight satisfaction in this. That satisfaction is quickly replaced with guilt of her own. It’s not just his fault she’d put off coming to see him too. Then again she hadn’t been the one to leave in the first place. Maybe if she had she wouldn’t have been included in the omniety and she wouldn’t know what she now did. No she needed to know about her mother, she needed to know that she didn’t have to spend another minute worrying about her or wishing she was here. Yet of course she couldn’t help but wish she didn’t know that she could have lived in happy ignorance and innocence a little bit longer.

Her eyes notice other things as well. Her brother looks different than last she’d seen him but that was to be expected after all. It was some years ago that they’d last laid eyes on one another it would be peculiar if he hadn’t aged at all. He certainly looked older than the boy she remembered and maybe a little scruffier but she could still see the brother she remembered in his face. Of course Saffron herself looked different. The baby fat all children had, had fallen away and she was taller, and scrawnier. Not a full grown woman by any standards but starting to show hints of the one she’d grow into. After the omniety she’d cut her hair, hacked away at it with a pair of scissors till it came somewhere just below her ears in various haphazard strands. Nimueh’s expression had been one of sheer shock when she’d seen the mess the girl had made of her hair, so she’d sat her down on a chair and carefully trimmed it into some sort of style. When asked why she did it Saffron couldn’t why out loud her throat had gotten all tight and she’d wasted more water. She’d done it because she didn’t want to look like Serafina. She didn’t want to look in the mirror and see a younger version of her mother staring back at her. So she’d cut her hair and if she could have she’d have changed the colour. Looking at her brother she realised he didn’t have too much of their mother in him. He was lucky.

“It’s okay Grayson, I figured you’d be tired when you got back and your friends would probably come around bugging you so I gave you some space. Maybe I should have come around sooner too,” she smiles slowly. She may still be angry at him for leaving her and caught up with thoughts about whether or not to tell him about their mother but nothing changes the fact that she’s missed her big brother and is happy to have him home. Crossing the space between them she pulls him from his chair and wraps her arms round him in a hug. It starts off feeling awkward but becomes comfortable as she squeezes her brother close. In that brief moment she wishes he’ll never leave again though she knows it’s probably inevitable. In that moment she just wants him to be safe and happy however foolish or unlikely that is to happen. It’s a while before she finds the strength to release him and back away. Her eyes are oddly bright again but she won’t let a drop fall. She clears her throat before trying to seek an easier topic that they’d both be comfortable with. “So tell me about the lands you travelled to, were they exotic, were they dangerous, did you meet any girls?” her eyes twinkle a little on the last one as she tries so hard to fall into the role of a good sister; of the good person she wants to be.
