I suspect that most setters have fallen foul of the Listener house rule that Harribobs mentions – no use of link words like ‘gets’, ‘is’ etc. (which imply that one side equals the other) in clues where the wordplay renders an extra letter. I confess that I don’t quite understand this rule as to me the preamble in such cases warns us that there is an error in the equation.
If, for example, we are told in a preamble that sums lead to the answer +1 then I think it would be fine to say A = 6 + 3 where A = 8.
