Clausal definer

I cut my teeth on Ximenes in the 50s and 60s. A type of clue he used at times was wordplay (called then 'subsidiary indications') + rest of clause, treating the wordplay as subject of the verb in the clause. 'Silly break makes the dough (5)' - a terrible clue, but it gives the idea. I haven't seen this type of clue for a long time. But 'first made' to indicate M is definitely unXimenean, and sloppy; 'first to make', yes. Who is/are the judge/s?
