It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that Bob passed away on Sunday.
Bob was a Times Crossword setter for 25 or so years, and his puzzles were of a rigorously high standard. More to the point, he was a truly lovely person who I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with many times, and we also kept a lively email correspondence going on the topics of crossword clues and football. A native of Cheshire, he was a passionate supporter of Manchester United, and someone, it was plain, who thought very deeply about crossword cluing, as was evident from his copiously annotated submissions, often accompanied by alternative clue suggestions.
His death comes as a great shock to myself and his Times crossword setting colleagues: none of us were aware of his illness, and he had been submitting puzzles as normal up until just over a month before his death
